Don't worry too much, new invigilators are rarely left alone until they are confident to cope with the exam on their own. You'll have a mentor if the exams officer is worth their job. For the first few exams you'll be as nervous as the students.
I see my roll as two fold; to assist in the accurate running of a formal exam, BUT also to help the student too. I always smile and try to make them feel at ease. It's tough enough for them so just be friendly.
You'll get training, and a formal booklet that goes through the exams rules and regulations. The booklets are always in the exams rooms too for reference so you won't need to know it all word for word.
Just be prepared for the unusual event and if in doubt then call for help. You should always be able to contact someone outside the room at all times.
I have had some very odd exams in the past few years. I have had papers where the questions couldn't be answered, papers with parts missing, fire alarms, nose bleeds, fainting etc..

Just want to thanks OP for starting this thread... I had never thought of invigilators but applied to local secondary and got the job.. they have many exams throughout the year.... so should be able to fit everything with home and few other contracts.. I've never done it so should be interesting.A friend is a present which you give yourself (R.Stevenson)

Just out of interest froggy, how much will you be paid in your role as exam invigilator?Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.I married Moon 8/4/2011, baby boy born 26/9/2012, Angel Baby Poppy born 8/11/15, Rainbow baby boy born 11/2/20170

I'm not froggy but in my school invigilating I get something like £7.45 an hour I think. For university invigilating it is £10.15 an hour. Both pay holiday pay based on something like one hour for every 8.something hours worked. Senior invigilators get paid more but don't know how much that is.
I'm doing school invigilating in November, did some university stuff in August, earlier on in October and will do a bit more in December. Both will have some in January, probably a bit in Match and then from end of April through to the end of June.0 -
Just wanted to let you all know that I got the job. It pays me £7.43/hour and I've just had my training. I've got my first invigilation job on Wednesday afternoon, so we'll see how it goes. There seems to be a lot to take in interms of the regulations and paperwork etc, but I'm sure it's something that can be picked up fairly quickly.Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.I married Moon 8/4/2011, baby boy born 26/9/2012, Angel Baby Poppy born 8/11/15, Rainbow baby boy born 11/2/20170

If you don't have an advert in the paper etc, then contact your local high school/college/university and ask to speak to the exams officer.Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.I married Moon 8/4/2011, baby boy born 26/9/2012, Angel Baby Poppy born 8/11/15, Rainbow baby boy born 11/2/20170 -
I think it may be too late for the January exams - our school has already sent out the invigilator timetable for then. But you could apply now in time for March and onwards..........;)[0

I used to do school invigilating through a supply agency. I did do some teaching and TA work as well, but if you were only interested in invigilating maybe an agency would take you on just for that.0
