I'll have a go, I really can't be doing with talking to that man at the shop but I also feel they should know that it isn't working. I want to know why they removed zonealarm to without putting it back and for what reason
    Thanx

Can anyone give me any idea how to get the pc to connect to the internet? My daughter can get on by the wireless so its not the connection its just the pc.

It stays on but after a while it gives a blue screen to close windows. How can I check for errors on windows without reformatting?

When I first brought it back from the shop again today it did connect to the net but sudenly closed down and now wont go online.

The fan readings from the bios are 51 but goes to about 54 or 55

I rang the other guy there rather than the nasty one and he said he had replaced it with bigger fan. He said he could reformat it if I want to but he couldnt do a new processor for it.

He said he had removed zone alarm because he detests it but i now find hes also removed several other programs including ccleaner and a shredder and recovery program I had. I thought that was rather rude really its my choice what i HAVE ON A PC.

i CAN SEE IN START UP INSPECTOR THAT THERE IS A kernal fault check start up on but it says the program doesnt exist now so he must have ran a check program
    Thanx

This fool is lifting your leg, why replace the fan with a bigger fan? You cannot do this, the fan/heat sink arrangement is there for a purpose, engineers calculate the best thermal transfer/airflow etc for a given size, please stop going to this Muppet he will take you for everything that you have, have a look in the yellow pages and the I.T Business on line web site and look for computer service engineers or find a more reputable shop.

You can get an adaptor for the heatsink to increase the size of the fan, I had one on my old pc going from 60mm to 80mm.

The temps displayed still seem somewhat high should be around 45 degrees at idle

If it goes past 60 degrees it tends to make the system unstable, maybe that is the cause of the blue screens you are getting.

The blue screen ypu are getting is normally a hardware fault (drivers). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death

You could try the following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 to scan for any errors on your hard disk, this would be a good start.

Yes you can get an adapter, you cannot just put a bigger fan on top of the heat sink, which is what was stated here, as the air flow will be lost over the skirts of the heat sink, but this still doesn’t warrant even installing an adapter, the PC requires a "full" diagnostic, a bit more than a Walter mitty armed with a screw driver, this is a crazy world at times, the quicker these trades require a registration or licence to trade the better, i work as an IT Support engineer through the day and I work from home repairing and servicing PC's in my spare time, I would not dream of blagging my boss or one of my customers like this.

    Stay clear of that shop.

Do you have any local computer Geeks or friends who know a little about computers?

If so my guess is they will know more than that so called computer engineer.

You need to get someone to look at it for you and get the temps down first before doing anything else.

I still think the thermal contact needs remaking, as when fitting the new cooler fan he disturbed it.

It's only a 30 minute job at the most and would rule in or out as that being the problem, it would also make sure the fan is fitted correctly.

If it is the thermal contact at fault and you keep shutting down because of it, soon the processor will break and you will be stuck then.

Then when you have done that I would boot to the BIOS and make a note of the temps, leave it on for a few hours and keep noting the temps.

If they rise to around 40c or below and remain stable for a few hours then it should be OK.

I would then format and reinstall a fresh system.

I'm connected by an old win 98 pc at the moment but its a real struggle as I have to disconnect the problem pc back up again to check stuff on there if need be plus the 98 pc wont take a usb mouse and the left click of the only one i have is totally broke so i have had to set it to left hand which im not and just use one side (god its a nightmare) if anyone has any links to what keyboard keys are for when using them as mouse would be helpfull?

I will have to get the fan sorted i know but as I said i cant do that for a while my daughters back at uni and ill do that when she comes back im not sure when that is. i think the pc will be ok till then though as it stays on now, it does still give a blue screen sometimes but not as much due to the fan i guess but i want to be able to connect to the internet with that one. Once I get online with thatr pc I'm going to have to look around for another pc even though i have a lot on financially right now i have to borrow the money. then i can get the fan sorted and have that as a back up pc.

I did make another thread yesterday because people might not go through this thread and i just want to if poss get it online.

as i said previously my daughters laptop connects wirelessly from the same set up and i usuall am wired directly. in control panel it says i am connected in ethernet adapter local area connection 5(yukon something) and theres another one that says 1394 which is also connected, thats the way its always been and another nvida which is disabled as always has been.

i have tried to repair both the ones connected. it says cant do it and on the 1394 one it says because tcp/ip is not installed on this connection but in the settings thing the tcop thing is ticked if that matters.

when i do a cmd for ipconfig it gives me
    ip address
    subnet mask
    and default gateway
i didnt think i should put the numbers here though
    Thanx

There is no information in ipconfig that is of any use to others.
