Windows wont load and pc closes down after taking it to shop

The pc will not load windows. It allows me to start in safe mode but then closes down itself a couple of mins afterwards. I tried to start in safemode with networking and it closes even quicker as soon as windows has begun.

Basically I had noises coming from the tower and cleaned the processor fan as it seemed to come from there. That didn't work so my dughter took it to the computer shop today to get a new one fitted. They changed it but the noise didnt go. They then changed the power supply but that also didnt work. Then they found a graphics fan hidden under something thats probaly the card I don't know. That was covered in dust, he cleaned it out with compressed air and said it needed a little wd40 on it but he couldn't find any. He showed my daughter how to do it at home so I did it as he had told her when she brought it back. I unscrewed the card, took it out of the slot turned it over took the 4 screws out to remove the cover, held it upside down so it wouldnt go on the card then left it to settle for 5 mins.

I then connected up all the wires and started it up. The sound is really quiet now but it wont load windows. A couple of times when it's turned on its just completely black nothing is on the screen so I have to press the button to close it down. Sometimes it starts the safe mode choice page itself saying something about windows cant start possibly due to new software being intalled and it was protecting the computer and to choose the last lsuccesfull log on. If I choose windows it closes down straight away, if I choose sage mode it stays for about 2 or 3 mins, safemode with networking about 5 seconds.

I rang the shop to ask if there was anything I could do to put it right and he was bit nasty saying all he had done was fit a fan and he had no idea and just take it back in.

Could I have u too much wd40 on do you think? Or is there anthin else I could try?

It was working but noisy before it went in, just don't understand hats happened

Also when it closes itself down I can't press the button to restart until I have switched it off and back on at the mains
Thanx

The processor fan is whizzing around I'm not sure on the graphics one though it's difficult to tell being under the card (if thats what it is) its silver crome I think under there. He changed the processor fan its about 2 inches square facing as you open the side could he have put a wrong one in?

I was surprised when he said wd40 but I thought well it must be ok if he runs a shop

TBH it sounds like the CPU is overheating.

Maybe the heatsink compound between the CPU and heatsink isnt working correctly/no contact, is the fan whizzing around?

    WD40 in a PC

Reading on and digesting more I reckon the WD40 is sat on the GFX card and causing a short, if im reading this right.

Oh flippin heck, do you think if its that that it will evaporate after a while?

He just put a new processor fan in and gave her the old one back changing the power supply didn't stop the noise so he put the old one back in again. He just cleaned the graphics card fan with a paintbrush but it looks really clean I can't see any dust even when i took the silver top off. Do you think it will be ok once its drid out? I did take it off again and looked to see if there were ny sins of wd40 but culdnt see any, I did gently clean it though just in case
    Thanx

WD40 won't cause a short. AFAIK it's good for 20kV + (car ignition HT anyone?). More likely something else has been disturbed/damaged. Check all connections, unplug them and plug them back in to make sure none are loose. Could have fried the graphic card with static when removing/installing. Was the PC unplugged when removing/installing? Check all cards and memory are seated firmly, after that, not sure.

I don't know if the man in the shop took the graphics card out to clean the fan with the pc plugged in but I thought I read on here that it remains earthed if its plugged in so when I did it I just connected the power cable but turned it off by the switch next to the power supply plug at the back of the pc then took the card out to put the wd40 on.

I've checked if all wires, connections and slots are in correctly and its made no difference it wont even let me turn it on in safe mode now for any length of time it just turns off before windows even starts.

I did have the cmos battery changed aswell if thats anything.

I hope they sell that cleaner at wilkos if so I'll try that or I could take it back to the shop.

My daughter said he did not test it attached to a monitor before she brought it home so I don't know if it was like it before it got home as I didn't think to test it before putting the wd40 on. I just presumed he would have tested it connected to a monitor.
    Thanx

If it has shorted out could it have damaged it so much that the pb cleaner might not work anyway?

It is now letting me log on in safe mode. I have checkdisked the c drive on the 2nd option and that completed (this is the one where programs are kept and things. I'm now doing the same on the d drive (has the main system stuff on it, I can't put anything else on it) it is massively slow but its doing it. Its now on phase 4 and just 1 little square after about 50 minutes is that ok? its much slower than the c drive one went.

Its been in safe mode now for over an hour but during the night I tried it and it only stayed on for 15 minutes max then turned itself off. I darent try starting normally. I'm using my daughters laptop right now.

Is there anything I can check or do whilst I'm in safe mode? anything in control panel or any system checks? or anything I should write own before it prob turns off again?

Is it advisable to do the diskcheck on the first option whislt its at risk of closing down on both c and d drives as they only work on a start up?
    Thanx

  • The shop guy seems like a complete cowboy to me and it sounds doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. Now he's trying to put you off from returning because he knows he's screwed up.

If theres a noise coming from something then it should be obvious what it is, it can only be a fan because there aren't any other moving parts inside a PC case. If he can't find whats making it then clearly he shouldn't be in the business of fixing PC's.

As already stated it sounds like something's probably overheating. Messing about with oils and solvents if you don't know what you're doing is not a good idea, and even if you do. Better to replace the fan entirely.

Sounds like an overheating CPU to me.

He may have replaced the CPU fan and not used any silicon between it and the CPU but to resolve it if this is the issue is a very fiddly job even for an IT professional.

If it was a short circuit i would expect it to work or not work rather than being an intermittent fault

you could check this in the BIOS on start up as some have CPU temp settings and indicators
