He had better not wipe it and if he thought had to he should let me know beforehand to check if I need anything saving.Thanx

He didnt attempt to start it up he just said it would no doubt be that the processor had gone without looking at it. He was going to call me back today but he hasn't. To be honest I felt like saying leave it I'll take it back home and get someone else to fix it. I was hoping the other man who works there would look at it as he seems more competant and is respectful and polite, totally oposite to this guy but he had gone out on a home visit.
I went back there because I thought if hes done it wrong he should put it right plus my daughter had to take me and shes a final year student nurse and is loaded with work so I feel terrible having her interupting her work to run around for this as shes stressed enough. I have to borrow her laptop if she takes a break or she types it in for me when she can.Thanx

Unfortunately there are so many cowboys out there who kid them selves into thinking they can repair a PC, yes PC's are generally plug and play but there is more to it than that, there should be a law against characters like this starting up in business, bring in a licence to trade i.e. like the corgi register for gas engineers, he cannot make a diagnosis like this he is an incompetent, my day job is spent as an IT Support Engineer, the Engineer bit comes from the fact I am qualified in various fields, Computer hardware and electronics being two of them, I also work from home helping home and small business users with there computer equipment, people like this make my blood boil, there is also health and safety issues here, i know most of the dangerous bits of a computer are isolated from the user but if there was a serious power supply fault it could result in injury, did he check the overall safety of the machine before he returned it to you?
No he didn't he just turned it on for a couple of seconds to hear that the noise had gone and that was it.
I agree there should be a license to trade for this, he has 2 shops, 1 in Derby and 1 in Nottingham but the guy that seems ok works in the Derby one most of the time.
Realy I don't trust him, I didn't like leaving it with him overnight but now hes keeping it longer, for how long I don't know but I think he could take a long time on purpose. I have a feeling that he could even do something to make it a right off even if its not just to be proved right and save face or to be nasty because I confronted him. He makes me think these things and I shouldn't feel that way being a customer its terrible. I know I want the comp back but I'm actually dreading his call and dreading talking to him.Thanx

This is a disgrace. What started out as a simple matter of replacing a fan on a graphics card has now turned into reseating a CPU heatsink and just possibly replacing a damaged CPU due to overheating. Why did he take off the heatsink anyhow? There was absolutely no reason to do so, if the fan wanted replacing that can be done without unseating the heatsink at all. The WD40 will probably dry out soon so the gfx card fan noise will likely come back too.
So not only has he messed up with his own incompetance I bet he's charged you through the nose for it too! It has nothing to do with hard drives theres absolutely no reason to wipe them.
It's your PC Lady_K he has no right to hang on to it. It's your property you don't have to give him any reason for wanting it back. I would demand he return to you immediately and if he refuses threaten him by saying you'll go to the Police. Don't pay him a penny more either.
Theres no excuse for this at all. Absolutely disgraceful.Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.0 -

Yes I was thinking that too I can't believe this small thing has lead to me possibly having no pc. I did think that he just couldnt be bothered when he said they can no longer get processors for this pc, they may not still be making them but there are bound to be some around even if second hand from parts. I definitely want it back intact even if he says its no good and I'll sort out recovering stuff from the hardrives afterwards somehow if I can't get it fixed elseware.
I don't know what heatsink is, all I know is the old fan which he removed and gave back to my daughter has like a flat copper type square on the back screwed on with 4 screws. The box that the new one was in says Alaska cooler for amd socket A athlon duron sempron 70mm fan.Thanx

The heatsink is the flat copper type square (with fins) between the fan & the processor
The old one doesnt have any kind of fins on it its just a plain flat square with the screws in. He told the young lad in the shop to put it on first but he stuggled so the man took over and he struggled too, apparently it took ages. I'm just wondering whether to ring the shop tomorrow to see what if any the progress is so far on it as he did say he would ring me on Saturday but didn't. I just think if I do he will be sarcastic again and take even longer because he likes to be in control and hates that I kind of had a complaint.
Its just my daughter goes back to uni n Tuesday evening and will take he laptop with her so I will then be without internet access and I do use it a lot for banking and shopping etc and mse of courseThanx

I would go in today and get it back if it was mine(even if it means going by taxi). He is a bodger who is just guessing at how to put it right.
Really pcs are not all that complicated plus there are people on here who have excellent knowledge and are not out to cheat you.0 -
Pictures of Heatsink fans http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&resnum=0&q=heatsink+fan&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi
P.S Get your PC back and report him to trading standards for immitating a PC Engineer.
The fan taken out looks in the pictures very much like the 3rd one along top row and it says cooler master cm12v on the front its replaced with Alaska cooler for amd socket A athlon duron sempron 70mm fan.Thanx

I didn't call them yeserday as I thouht if I left it till today they couldn't say I had'nt given them reasonable time to sort it as I took it back again last Friday.
Anyway the young girl there just called me saying that some work had been done on it and it appears to be working. I just hope they left it on for some time to be sure. I asked what had been done and she said she did't know but there is no charge and the boss said he will drop it off at the tesco carpark in my town to save me going to get it as he doesn't have his satnav with him or he would have brought it to my house.
I asked who had fixed it and she said the man from Derby not the man that originally changed the fan.
I am still sceptical whether it will actually work and stay on after all this but I will believe it when I've put it to the test.Thanx
