I dont know where your from but as were in a rural part of the country (Devon) we just go to the local farm shop and buy a working dog mix. The vet reccomended this as theres no additives and its super cheap!

Is the food OK in nutritional terms for non working dogs? Ie, wont make them crazy or overload their system with protein?

In case you find James Wellbeloved a bit pricey, I spent ages looking at dog foods and found Arden Grange to be the cheapest of the "good" foods (contain understandable ingrediants like chicken, rice, etc rather than animal derivatives and such - if they could legally call it meat they would, so what exactly is it?!). I've been using it for a few years now (well, my dog has!). It does seem to be under advertised though, very few people have heard of it!

Ideally its for dogs like springers / labradoors. Those who love going on long walks and have tonnes of energy! I.e. working dogs!! (well those breeds).

Our springers are on it and to be honest I think they need it as we all know how nuts springers are!

Went to buy the usual Burn's yesterday and noticed the pet shop had stuck up a little note advising of an impending 10% increase! Can anyone recommend a really good quality dried food that may be a bit cheaper? Would like to save a few pennies but don't want to compromise on the dog's health as he's always been so healthy on Burn's.

    Looking forward to your recommendations.

There isn't a cheaper alternative that is same quality, that I know of, the cost reflects the quality, the cheaper the dog food the poorer the quality.

If you do have to budget then look at the ingredients of the dog food, stay away from anything with animal derivatives listed in the ingredients, some of the CSJ foods aren't bad and are cheaper, also decide if you what to keep feeding a rice based food as many dog foods are wheat based. Laughing dog are good, but the price is still high. Arden Grange are a good food and you can get discounts if you work your dog. Nutro is mean't to be good, but that is expensive. JWB isn't to bad, but again isn't cheap. A couple of the Skinners dog foods like the Duck and Rice or the Salmon and rice are okay and not too bad on price. Not sure I would recommend anything else as the quality and ingredients get a lot lower including the types of perservatives used in dog foods, personally I would stay away from anything with BHT or BHA listed as a perservative

It's very difficult to balance quality of food and the price, also very complicated

If you were happy paying the old price, why not just feed 10% less and supplement with "free" stuff. As well as the usual leftovers, I find dog stock (chicken + potato + veg leftovers (no onions)) goes down well.

I also doubt anyone could find a cheaper way of feeding than those 16p/lb Tesco sausages!

Final thought, try online. Sorry I can't suggest a cheap online place as I've found it changes every time I look. Ordering from Burns direct (free del) might be cheaper for you @ £38.50.

If you are anywhere near worcestershire, you can collect free or pay £3 postage.

They are excellent, my dog's proplan food is £10 cheaper for a 15kg sack than in the shop we used to buy it in x

Thanks shelley - we'll be using them next time we order.

Delivery is £3.95. I see you fell for the old .95p trick though - shame on you :) .
