wear surgical gloves or similar when touching the modules for insertion.
Whatever you do, don't do this, the static build up between you and the glove will fry the chip. Just make sure your hands are clean and dry, and touch something metal first to dissipate any possible static.====0 -
Hi, I'm really worried now after what other's have said about buying only branded and making sure each unit is exactly matched. Here's what I've just done. I did a system check on crucial, and it advised me to get: 2GB kit (1GBx2), 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC3200 memory module. (http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=7622A8F1A5CA7304)
However, I went onto 7dayshop as suggested by Martin, and did a serch for DDR PC3200-the same as what Crucial suggested, right? Saw it's 1 gig at £17.99, so purhcased 2 of them: (http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_11&products_id=102237)
Have I just wasted £40?0 -

IMO yes, matching ram is an ideal, but in the real world doesn't make a huge difference. I have often run mis-matched ram, my laptop at the moment has a 1 GB stick and a 512MB stick, I have ordered a 2GB stick from the special offer and will then have 2GB and 1GB installed.
If you have one stick of 333mhz and the other at 400mhz, both will run at the lower speed, there are no other ill effects.
EDIT:
Just re-read your post, and without checking prices you might not have overspent that much, your laptop takes older DDR memory, these special prices are for DDR2 and wouldn't actually fit in your laptop,I haven't seen any specials for the older DDR memory.====0 -
Hi
there seems to be a lot of people unsure about where to get what specs of the ram i.e pin number etc. I find Everest very useful as it puts everything about your computer (pc) in a nice easy format so you can tell exatcly what you have at the moment in terms of ram cpu motherboard etc and thus what you can use. It was really useful for me as i have an old dell which needed upradgeing and was no longer on the site for specs.
the site to download theprogram is http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html.
Obviously this is a 3rd party site so use your own discretion i found it really useful hope someone else does.
Incidentally if you have a mac just use the "about this mac" tool and it tells you everything you need to know0 -

I took delivery of three sticks of 2GB 800MHz SODIMMS from 7dayshop a couple of days ago. Two were for my Dell XPS M1710 desktop replacement and one for my girlfriend's 11.1" travel laptop.
I fitted my two sticks without incident and ran them through the full range of Dell memory diagnostics, which took about an hour and declared no faults. The BIOS sees the 4GB but unfortunately my decrepit old chipset is limiting the available RAM to 3327MB and that's all the operating system gets to play with. I've installed Vista Home Premium X64 from scratch and everything is performing flawlessly.
A Google will reveal the 3327MB limit on some laptop chipsets....
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLJ_enGB268&q=intel+chipset+3327MB
Unfortunately I'll have to break a warranty seal on my girlfriend's laptop so I'm going to hold off installing to that machine until the warranty expires.0 -
Hi everyone,
After reading all the posts, I thought i'd submit this. In my experience when you buy certain laptops Crucial doesn't recognise them and it is sometimes hard to find out the info needed. Anyway below is a link to a little freeware programme called CPU -z. It will work in Vista & XP and will tell you exactly which motherboard and RAM you have. Its a brilliant programme
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php#download
Also you should find out whether the RAM being sold for £22 is Low or High density. Low density is good and high density is bad (they will both work but low density is faster and more compatable with motherboards)
I usually buy all my RAM from a company called Scan www.scan.co.uk ; based in Bolton on the Reebok stadium site. They sell decent cheap RAM for desktops and laptops.
For example a 1GB stick of Corsair XMS 2 Extreme DDR2 RAM (desktops) is around £14 and laptop DDR2 RAM is around £12 for 1GB.
They are cheap for all computer bits, but do charge for delivery. However if you live nearby, you can visit their trade counter and they will always advise you correctly.
I sent my mate there to buy some RAM, he wanted 4GB but they would only sell him 3GB as they said his 32bit version of Windows wouldn't support any more. 64 bit OS support alot more RAM
Hope this helps

So my 2GB ram arrived from 7dayshop this morning, quite impressed, speedy delivery and well packaged. Just installed it into my Vista laptop, so now instead of 1.5GB ram, I have 3GB ram, and what a difference.
Photoshop CS3 used to take somewhere around 20 seconds to load fully, importing and a RAW image from a CF used to take a while, probable 10 seconds or so and editing the image used to be a few seconds for completion. Now it opens in under 10 seconds, and opens and edits the image in seconds, almost instantaneously.
Well worth the £20 upgrade.====0 -
Yes it's true adding more ram does improve the speed of your computer but that's not all, the more ram the faster your computer "the more applications you want to run" so it's like a never ending race.
We are a repair centre in Greenwichcc.com. We advise clients with the following:
To find out how much memory you have, right click on the "my computer icon" on your desktop or at the start button, then go to properties.
if you have 512mb which is minimum all computers must have these days, however you shouldn't run online games, java applications, smart editing software and downloading software such as Limewire, utorrent ect..
But this is fine for general use like checking emails, browsing, watching dvds..
If you have 1GB, you can do all what's above except editing software such as Photoshop. 1GB is great for anyone who doesn't like to wait that extra three or four seconds.
2GB and more, is great for gamers, studio work, faster internet browsing and editing video or photos however for 3D applications you'll need at least 3GB of ram.
In the end adding more ram won't harm your computer, for us it's the most important peace to boost your computer even if your processor is P3 or P4, so it's always best to add as much as you can afford.
but that's not all, if we come back to my point "never ending race" viruses, spywares, large programs, hidden files and adware in your registry slowdown your computer anyway no matter how much ram you have. And if you’re thinking that your antivirus protects you 100% from all…you’re wrong.
