If you're not sure what you're doing, I would always go with the Crucial Memory Scanner, which will tell you exactly what you need. Far better to spend an extra couple of quid for peace of mind that you're definitely buying the right thing.

Just because something says it's the correct amount of pins and correct speed doesn't mean it's the correct "build" of memory.

If you know what you're doing and you know what you need, go for the deal. If you're not sure - Don't risk it.

As a newbie, I am now completely confused!

You say: "Go with the Crucial Memory Scanner". Well, I have done that scan and it advises me to install certain additional memory - 2GB with free delivery for only £28.

However, if I read you correctly, the rest of your post indicates that I shouldn't trust this advice.

Should I - or should I not - accept the advice from their scan and purchase this memory?

There's confusion, too, about the Microsoft licence. I bought my laptop second hand with Windows etc already installed. I have no idea about any licence numbers. Will I be able to install additional memory OK?

Please will someone help me out here! I don't want to miss out on what sounds like a good deal, but equally I don't want to waste my money.

If you are 'fortunate' enough to have Vista, there is a technology called ReadyBoost that allows the PC to use USB Memory as an additional cache. As USB memory is considerably cheaper than SODIMMS, it could be the most cost effective way of speeding your PC (especially notebooks).

Check out this article and do your own research!
Sorry, I'm going to pull you up on this. USB memory is cheaper than RAM, but its not as efficient as RAM either. 2Gb of RAM is going to be £25-30 depending on type, speed, etc.
But with RAM, you know exactly what you are getting. USB flash sticks are much more vague. You can get a 2Mb stick for £5, but its going to be slow, possibly too slow for readyboost.
See This blog with more info. Basically, RAM is better. readyboost will boost the startup time of the PC, but thats about it.

Other notes: as mentioned before in the thread, Windows has limits on how much RAM it can see. 99% of users on here will be running 32-bit operating systems (And if you don't know what I'm talking about, you will be). These are only able to see 3 and a bit Gb of RAM. There is nothing to stop you putting 4Gb in, but you will not see an advantage over that 3 and a bit. The only way to see more than the 3Gb is to have a compatable processor and upgrade to a 64-bit version of windows, but thats rather complicated.

Regarding windows activation, its touch and go. Sometimes it wants reactivation, other times it doesn't. Depending on the brand of laptop, I think some companies like Dell print a license key on the bottom of the laptops?

Can anyone post a link that has a step through guide of how us newbie's might be able to change the RAM (without blowing anything up!)

Re Crucial. This company is perhaps the most efficient, customer friendly on-line retailer in the UK, along with Amazon and one or two others.
Completely agree. I just upped the memory to the maximum on my two laptops and Crucial were very helpful indeed.

It was quite a complicated process, but their on-line chat facility was very helpful. I'm no techie, but if you use common sense and take the precautions mentioned earlier, an upgrade is not too difficult, even if like me, you have to get under the keyboard to replace one memory module! The difference in speed makes it well worthwhile.

Sorry renard, I think I've confused myself here, never mind other people. :) What I meant to say was you can completely trust Crucial, but don't necessarily trust A N Other site that lists memory that sounds like it might be what you need, unless they give a 100% compatibility guarantee. So basically, if you want the memory, and you like Crucial's price - buy it!

Does your laptop have a sticker underneath it that looks something like this:

    MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP HOME/PROFESSIONAL
    ABCDE-12345-FGHIJ-67890-KLMNO

If so, that's your fully legal and legitimate license number.

Most of the memory upgrades I've done haven't required a re-activation, so that may be irrelevant anyway.

It completely varies - on some it's just a case of undoing one screw underneath, on some others you have to remove the keyboard. What's the make and model of your laptop?
