Can anyone post a link that has a step through guide of how us newbie's might be able to change the RAM (without blowing anything up!)

    http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-laptop-memory.htm

Found this it might be helpfull.

    It does look straightforward.

Are there any other sites to find out what memory to buy? According to crucial, my Daughter's laptop doesn't exist. It has just about every model except hers :(

I would most definitely second that - I've been using 7dayshop for many years and have always had excellent service and great prices from them. They are also very good at communications - I have asked questions before buying and also used their after-service which was exceptionally good!

(and no, I didn't buy the company - apologies to Victor Kiam!!)
I did have a close shave (pun intended!) with their fake copies of McAfee and Nero though... they never admitted it but quietly refunded the money.

I guess they were also susceptible to a bit of a bargain when Mr.Wholesale Counterfeiter offered them the goods.

Delivery can be a bit slow at times but they are OK.

When I was watching 'It Pays To Watch' yesterday I cringed when Martin said something like "supercharge your PC" because the inherent problem with any technical thing like this where there's a continuing changing in standards and compatibility problems, many people will find themselves buying stuff that doesn't work or that they don't know how to fit.

Not saying you shouldn't take it on, but I'd say it's easier to 'get right' connecting up a washing machine or building flatpack furniture, because there are fewer factors that could contribute to failure.

Just some of the issues to do with RAM upgrades:

    - may look right and fit but may be wrong - speed, type of chips
    - could be incompatible with what's already in there (sometimes some RAM is soldered onto the motherboard)
    - may need to discard old modules if no spare slots
    - may need (for some laptops) a matched pair of modules
    - static discharge when handling
    - BIOS may barf upon reboot; need to reconfigure, and may involve going into it and changing settings (though most will auto-reconfigure and beep to tell you, then you press a key to carry on)
    - possible reactivation requirement (I've never needed to do this, I have to say)
    - warranty issues (rare, but possible)
    - may not 'supercharge' your system at all; many factors at play (software running at startup, hangovers from previos installs, bad configuration)

What I'm saying is that I'm not a fan of 'blanket advice' - yes it will work for many people, but I would bet there would be even more people that run into difficulties. If you know a PC-geek, get them to help you out as a bit of insurance.

You are more likely to have success with a recent branded machine for which technical specs. are more readily available and memory selectors are provided on RAM manufacturer sites.

[I now expect flaming for scaremongering which is not my intention - you DO have to have a relatively high confidence with dealing with hardware components AND an eye for detail when it comes to determining the spec of what you have and what you need to upgrade it]
The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster! :)

That's probably similar for a lot of laptops, but unfortunately there are different models with different configurations, and removing screws on flaps underneath laptops may end up with you getting to the hard disc, or in some cases the processor heatsink. Saying that though, once you have got in, RAM slots themselves as pictured in that page do all look virtually identical, so it should be obvious there.

Depends on your model of laptop. All computers have some sort of limit as to what they can handle memory wise. Some are lower than others. However, if this is the laptop above that you mention you use Vista on, then that's obviously a new laptop and I'm sure will probably be able to handle 3GB no problem.

If you can't get the Crucial System Scanner to work, just browse the manufacturer list on the www.crucial.com/uk website and that will list modules that are compatible with your system.
  • I'm not sure if the 2 gb, the ones with the offer, are suitable for my laptop as Crucial say that my laptop can only have a max of 1 gb per slot. Quell domage. Good try though.:T

Is it a slightly older Laptop when 2GB SODIMM wasn't readily available?

Reason I ask is my FSC Amilo D 1437G says it will only take 1GB SODIMM's but I have a 2GB one working fine a Kingston one I picked up from Play, tested it with 4GB in total and worked fine.
    Cheers
