6 months in my case for just £12. And that was recorded 1st class, but lack of signature doesn't constitute proof of no delivery as far as RM are concerned unfortunately.

the rd issue is one ive read on MSE a few times.
i can see where some issues arise either on delivery or the paper trail and i wonder if the PDA's are going to address lots of this.
however as is the RM way many day to day operation questions i have put the my managers have gone unanswered.
eg given in my office posties dont go back at the end of delivery.
where do the PDA's go?how do they get charged? how does the data upload and where/when?
for my office you are talking over 100 pda's so its not a small amount of data

I've had many Recorded items just left in my Front Porch. I've seen them come up the pathway, leave the item and then just wander off!!!

Makes you wonder why there is such a thing as Recorded Delivery...

RM have a lot to answer for in my view.

unfortunatly(though rm would strongly deny it) its all about cost cutting now.
    training is at a minimum
only part timers are employed now
if a full timer leaves then a part timer replaces them and the remaining full timers take up the slack
quality of service is way down the list

I spoke to a Postie a few weeks ago when I was still hoping my items would turn up (My regular Postie who's fabulous has been off sick) He said there is a lot of discontentment ATM with new regulations brought in, and lots of people were off sick possibly because of it all. He said there were Casual type people taking over the rounds. How do we know if these people are honest and trustworthy? I ask this because I've never had items 'go missing' like this in past years. Mine first real encounter with this problem started on 7TH Dec 07. Which is the one I mentioned earlier that took a little over 3 Months to get my money back. This was only because the sender was kind enough to fill in all these ridiculously long forms etc.

rm do criminal checks but thats no good given being a postie may have been the 1st time temptation has been put in their way IYKWIM
we have a few really good part timers who would love ot go full time.
however the bulk do it as a stepping stone to a decent job so really couldnt care less
most full time posties look after their customers and people like seeing the same postie.
you get to know your customers and them you. i know where loads of my customers work, when they will be home, what people they knowetc etc
i have a few care in the community folks and disabled folks on my duty but i know where their carers live so can pass on mail, packets or advise thewm of issues.
all of this stuff comes under a mail 'service'
a service doesnt make profit and for RM to keep profit then the service goes and a business comes in.

plenty slate rm,overpaid/underworked posties etc etc but to get the service folks want/need requires a less profit driven enviroment

Many thanks for your replies Custardly. You sound like a great Postie as my regular one is...

Could you tel me what IYKWIM stands for?

I'll not slate the Posties in general, in my view they do give us a great service. I'm talking about the fact that 3 items went 'missing' all at the same time. 2 others sent around that time arrived safely, as did 1 sent after that date. So I'm just suspicious that someone just decided to swipe all 3 items. It is just too coincidental for 3 to vanish at the same time I feel.

items do go missing.however to give rm their dues they do try and catch people.
the problem is tracking it down and getting evidence
at least when they do it tends to end in a jail sentence

I'm furious with royal mail too!!!. I was expecting a parcel so I asked for it to be delivered to me at OHs business address because we can guarantee someone will be there during office hours. The parcel was sent recorded delivery-as expected. We had a card put through saying no one was in (despite the fact that no one had even tried to deliver as someone was in!!!)and to phone to arrange redelivery etc. This was on thursday-the office was closed for easter bank holiday so I phoned up first thing this morning. Thge automated message said:
If you are phoning to arrange re-delivery the quickest and easiest way is to collect your parcel from our sorting office.
Well no, actually that isn't the quickest and easiest way when the office is only open between set times and people have to work. I have to say there is no wonder people have a low opinion of Royal Mail as we receive very shoddy service from them-why should we have to collect a parcel because someone can't be bothered to deliver it!!! Not only do they not try to deliver it, they will post a card through and when you ring up they will agree to deliver it to a local post office for an extra charge of 50pence!!!!
So I'm now toying with the idea of complaining, but the question is how and to whom???
Any advice and opinions greatly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

Can I ask where all your mail for work went that day?

unfortunatly the system is never going to be perfect
it never was and the cuts RM are briniging in arent helping!!
just today while dealing with the callers office(parcel collections)
i got called an idiot by someone at the door
this because she had tried to phone for 3 days
as i explained we dont have 'phone staff' and given it was taking 3 of us just to deal with the queue ,it was self evident why it was hard to deal with the phone
to polarise it i got a mouthful of abuse the week before from a guy at the door as i said i would be with him once i had dealt with the call i was on
a great example of redelivery failures is when an item is organised for redelivery on the CLEO(communication link every office) list, which is what the online/CS redelivery requests come through
if the item is delayed coming back to us and it misses its requested slot then we dont send it out on another day as we never know who would be in

We've had a load of problems with RM recently.

Had a package returned to sender as we failed to collect it at the sorting office. However, we hadnt had a card through to say it was at the office. Fortunately, we had bought from a very good ebay seller, who refunded us fully including postage.

Also had another failed package delivery as we were out. Went to sorting office to collect. Apparently it wasnt there as it had been sent to a larger sorting office in the next city. They said they would deliver the next day. We said that wasnt any use as we'd be out. Nothing they could do. Ask for it just to be sent to our sorting office and we will collect. Nope. Need to wait for another delivery attempt, then they will send it back to local sorting office. So go to collect it again, and yep, you've gueesed it. It was sent back to other sorting office apparently. Eventually got it after a few phonecalls to a manager at our SO.

Also with Signed for Delivery at my work. Postie just leaves the stuff just inside the shop entrance, on the floor. Even when its signed for.

Custardy, you sound like a really good postie! You given us all some good info here.
