there is no such policy.this goes agaisnt RM's USO(universal service obligation just like star treks prime directive ;) ) that every door in the UK gets 1 attempted mail delivery 6 days a week.
there are some pre arranged exceptions to this like some highland islands for example
    now thats a national agreement.
now on a local level there are some variations.eg say im delivering on my route and a stair has broken buzzers and i cannot get access or speak to anyone.
after a few days i will stop delivering mail and will retain it for (technically) 7 days before returning it if there is no contact from the residents.
in this case i obviously wont be taking out packages for that stair

perhaps you should investigate this further when you go to work it might be something you dont know yet it would save you bothering to load the parcels

no need.if this policy was instigated it would have massive implications.what this is basically endorsing is 'willful delay'
this is a sackable offence and i know of a postie who was sacked(not in my office) just 2 weeks ago for willful delay
theres no way there is a policy where you can just not bother ot take out a package.now i have customers on my duty i know are never ever in but i still take the packet out as it maybe that day they are waiting in for it.
i would make a note of times, dates and to whom you spoke and raise this with postcomm. i would also speak to your local delivery office manager as i can pretty much state 100% he/she will never say they dont have to attempt delivery.
manangers are feeling the pressure now as well so keeping their nose clean is of high imortance

my duty is 750 doors all in stairs.old style tenement and newer blocks of 6 to 16 flats. i get 1 to 1.5 sacks of packets a day(sacks not red bags) so if this was a policy i woul know ;)

Hi custardy. Thanks for your response. I ordered an item to be delivered to a business address and I was out with the kids on thursday so my OH was going to be at work and if anything was delivered he would be there to receive it. He got the post delivered. Loads of letters and the card etc-no parcel. He was snowed under with work and inadvertantly forgot about it until about 3pm. The office where the parcel is held is only open until about 12.30 (from 7am). After that time the earliest we could try and get in touch was this morning so I phoned them at 7.15am and managed to get cut off for no apparent reason, then on the several occasions I tried to ring after that I could not get through. I left a message on the ansafone and a contact telephone number but nobody rang me.
While I appreciate it is more convenient to pick up a parcel from the post office than the delivery office, if the post person had tried to deliver the parcel to the business address in the first place that would have been more convenient and expected.

What Sean Connery does to his employees (sorry custardy, caught you just before your edit :D ).

As I said in my first response on this thread, Custardy will put you right on what the policies actually are. Sounds like the local office are lying to fob you off.

a business shouldnt be carded, period.if a business is open during delivery hours then packages/mail should be delivered regardless.
the only time i get the drivers ot card is for holiday shuts,no access(like big gates) and 9am special deliveres when they open later than 9.
the card is left to prove before 9 attempts but they then re-attempt later in the day as a 'normal' SD
sounds like some poor practices going on in that DO
forget phoning delivery offices for redelivery.theres just no time for the phones in most offices

this is the number for postwatch 08456013265

Many thanks Silverfoxdude for this telephone number.

I wondered who to complain to regarding 3 SMALL ITEMS all 'Gone missing' at around the same time (Posted 27/28TH Feb 08) All 3 posted from 3 different parts of the Country, from 3 diffferent people!

The Post Office complaints proceedure is just ridiculous... Massively long forms to complete, then 3 months wait to get compensated for fairly inexpensive items!

I will contact Postwatch tommorrow to see if they can help with this.

6 months in my case for just £12. And that was recorded 1st class, but lack of signature doesn't constitute proof of no delivery as far as RM are concerned unfortunately.

I've had many Recorded items just left in my Front Porch. I've seen them come up the pathway, leave the item and then just wander off!!!

Makes you wonder why there is such a thing as Recorded Delivery...

RM have a lot to answer for in my view.
