Katie, Yes, I have been there, many times. How did you think I know that I haven't won?
"Well two people won £10,000 this month with a holding of just £100 each!! One had held them for 16 years,"
M3, what is even more interesting is that looking through that same listing the earliest date that I could spot of those winners buying their bonds is 1977, thus seemingly confirming the theory that bonds held for a seriously long time don't win anything, and hence promting my question "how do we know whether thay are still particiapating in the draw?"0 -

I just pulled this off their site:
NS&I is keen to reunite winners with their prizes and urges customers to get back in touch and check if they are a winner.
There is no time limit on claiming. Each unclaimed prize is held until the winner can be tracked down. The oldest unclaimed prize dates back to the first draw in June 1957.
So I guess that means they're still looking.;)0 -
Lucky you! I have some of the very first premium bonds which I think are now 50 years old and I have NEVER won a penny!!0

Was stuck in traffic in morning, continued on-job warfare with a mad egoistic colleague.....was so busy had to skip lunch break.......witnessed a accident on way back home. By 6 my tie was around my forehead, instead of being around my neck.... You all will agree....Tuesday at work cannot be worser.
But there it was waiting on my door mate, a glowing envelope with 50 quid cheque against a holding of 350 pounds held just for 53 days. Premium bonds......i love it ( I am still convinced I won't win anything for next 40 years though).
Is it wise to en cash the winnings or reinvest. What do i do next ?
Sorry for over exaggeration of this post.....This was buildup of frustration throughout today.0 -

Surely what it confirms is that:
- The maximum holding then was less than it is now;
- Many people who held bonds then have since died;
- Many people who held bonds then have since cashed them in (possibly buying more later);
- Some people who held bonds then have deliberately "refreshed" them, thus perpetuating the myth about only newer bonds winning because the very people who believe it now hold newer bonds, further reducing the number of older bonds in each draw?
Or to put it more simply, every time a bond is bought, the percentage of older bonds in each draw reduces. That's why some people believe older bonds are less likely to win!.0 -
Prob more likely is that 98% of the bond holding is bought after 19770
