Yes i think it is misleading, had/has me worried. I did consider changing it to an external account but am intrigued now, so have left it as is to see what happens. I will update you next week. Hopefully I will have my money!
Checked my direct saver account this morning for the residual amount of prize money that has taken me over the threshold, and it is has not been deposited yet, Will check again tomorrow.

Did try phoning them but got cut off, not great customer service :(
It's just my opinion and not advice.

Keep trying SouthCoastBoy.    I had to try multiple times before I succeeded in talking to a real person, and even then it needed several attempts beforethey implemented  what I was asking for,   ie to have prize money paid into my bank account instead of receiving a paper warrant,   was actually implemented.  .

An article on the Daily Mail/Money Mail website yesterday, 11th April 2023, obtained via a Freedom of Information request:

The luckiest ever Premium Bond winner has taken home a total of £1,019,850, across 288 prizes, since they bought their first bond in May 2004, Money Mail can reveal.

One bondholder has bagged more wins over the same time, with 408 prizes.

How foolish.  Many, many holders will have received more than 408 prizes over 19 years.

How MSE is drowning in this calibre of nonsense.

  • I have 203 wins over 11 years... :|
  • 22 wins in 6 months, think I have another line to add to my spreadsheet...
    Make £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

    Make £2024 in 2024...

Interesting. Assuming we take this at face value I think that the "luckiest ever Premium Bond winner" shows that Premium Bonds aren't all that impressive. If we assume the scenario that they won one less prize (287 instead of 288) and that the prize they didn't win was worth £1M then since 2004 they would only have won £19,850 worth of prizes. We don't know how many Premium Bonds they held over those 19 years but if we assume £50k worth (an incorrect number I know, since it was not possible for one person to hold £50k worth of Premium Bonds in 2004) then that is a gain of roughly 40% over those 19 years. Holding stocks (say in a global tracker) over that same period of time would have netted a much better return.

Of course the fact that they won the £1M makes my point pretty moot. Still, if we take into account that the chance of winning £1M is incredibly small (even with a max holding over a 19 year period) it highlights that Premium Bonds are only really worth having as part of your cash holding. If you want an investment then Premium Bonds are not the way to go.

The other winner mentioned that has won 408 prizes over the same time period highlights this too, since they were less lucky with the prizes they won, amounting to £14,325. Sure if it was on a holding of £1 that's pretty impressive, I suspect they were holding a lot more than that though.

Nice one Deru, I would be happy with that any month, while I still have my enjoyment of checking to see if any of the £5000 prizes upwards come my way.
