i have been compiling some statistics since the beginning of 2003

    year winnings holding interest rate

    2003 £200 £19650 1.02%
    2004 £900 £19650 4.58%
    2005 £350 £18500 1.87%
    2006 £1550 £21090 7.35%

these figures are not very scientific as i have been withdrawing and adding in an haphazard way. also, the holdings stated are the the highest i have held in any given time in that year. so it has to be said that the holding has been lower in the year.

therefore, the interest is a conservative figure

not sure if it was a waste of time posting this lol

Interesting stats and at first glance you seem to have been lucky.

A closer look and it's less attractive. If the average holding of £19722.50 had been invested in a non-gambling savings vehicle for four years, you would have needed a return of 3.6% after tax (5% at 40% for higher rate tax payers).

Looking at that, you have come out fairly well. However, you probably believe that you've done well out of holding PBs and, by sharing your good fortune with others, help to perpetuate the myth that PBs are an investment rather than a form of gambling.

    :)

Here we go. £10.00 bought in 1966. In 2005 it came up with it's first win of £500.00. The bond was bought for me when I was a baby, from my Grandfathers winnings on the horses.

I purchased for my son 170.00 in 1999, he has won twice, two lots of 50.00 with these bonds.

I then purchased a further 1000.00 in 2002, and he has won 3 lots of 50.00 and I have re-invested this into more bonds.

I bought myself 200.00 of bonds in Nov 2005, and have won 50.00.

So I don't know whether new ones are better or older ones.

All I do know is, is that we should have a bigger prize fund and more prizes, if more bonds are bought, and I would like to win the big one.
  • Every bond has an equal chance of winning.

For some people to win, many more people have to lose.

Winners promote the Government's PB scam as a positive thing. Losers keep quiet.

    On average:
PBs are ok for higher rate tax payers.
PBs are not so good for standard rate tax payers.
PBs are rubbish for non-tax payers.

Maybe it is time for PBs to be privatised? I'd buy shares in the company that runs the scam.

    :)

    why have 2 x 1 million prizes?

they should stick with 1 x 1 million prize and also have 20,000 x £50 prizes, that way, you would hear about more winners!
