What do people think, is it best to invest the max allowed in 1 big chunk.... or make small deposits of say £1000? Would chances of success increase or decrease either way?

Not that i have that kind of money but a question i always had on my mind.

    Thanks

My premium bonds were built up over the months by putting in the minimum of £50 via my bank account every month. I put extra in when I felt a bit flush.

    My wins, see above message.

Only thing I can say is perhaps by having many smaller blocks over all the numbers possibly available, statistically it may match up more to random numbers better.

Can't say this is the case. Perhaps it's one question that Martin can ask his number cruncher expert.

wow u got better luck than me, the most I have ever had is 3x£25 on £40k holdings. And I usually go 3 or 4 moths without a win. You actually won more than I have one in the last year.

£25 win with max 40k, the bond was worth 4k.

    2014 I have won a total of £375 all £25 wins

At 1/1/14 I had 19k worth of bonds and built them up over the months and only hit 40k limit since Sept 2014 draw.

    2012 - 1.66% return
    2013 - 0.825% return

Since holding with first bond bought in 1977! - never had more than a £25 value win.

Maximum holding for the past 4 years.

Just a quick update for 2014 performance.

Notified this morning of December winnings. As it happens the biggest of the year with 5 x £25 wins.

Total for the year based on £40k maximum holding was (only:() a yield of 1.375%.

I guess better that a slap in the face and perhaps inline with general poor savings rates in the market.

Good luck all PB holders for bigger wins in 2015!

After my shock of £100 win last month, I'm surprised again with a win 2x£25 - my average since 2009 is £25/month.

  • Going back to the OP initial Q-.

You may have asked the wrong Q.

    I would suggest:-

Anyone with more than £26,000 in PB ?

(you have a 1:26,000 chance of Winning per month, thus holding £26,000 you have an evens chance of winning each month)

    If YES......

By each Year, what are your annualised winnings ?

(if the cohort is winning LES now than when they first held bonds and they haven't removed and reinvested, then you MIGHT have a case for the theory you hold)

As many people have said if you take money out and then immediately reinvest you have missed a months draw, thus are only in 6 of the 12 annual draws.

The answers you get from the New Q will prove that mathematically you will get with Luck 1 win per month. That has a high probability of being a £25 win as there are 1.7 Million £25 prizes per month.
If you get better Luck then you may win a bigger prize or multiple prizes.
Debt is a symptom, solve the problem.
