The 5 of us in our family hold 100 each. Three of us has won one prize each in 5 years. My prize was 100, so all my money back.

We don't hold more, as I think of it as a gamble as you can get better interest elsewhere. But a better gamble than the lottery as you get your stake back if you don't win.

Yes, I really can't understand why people would play the Lottery when they can buy Premium Bonds and keep their original stake.

Is it the excitement that appeals to them? If so, then bet on a random horse, the odds are better, and so is the buzz.

I bought £1000 about five years ago. Within the first year I had four prizes totalling £250 - Wonderful.

    Not a sausage since!

Still OK compared to money in the bank but I need another prize soon otherwise I'll be on the wrong side - which is of course where I should be statistically!

Remember, with premium bonds you are losing the interest your money would earn.

Even now you can get 4.25% (taxable) for a five year deposit. So on a thousand pounds that is £35 a year after tax.

So, the true alternative is to buy £35 of lottery tickets.
