£50 win for february ..... holding now is £12,250 .....

struggling to keep topping up by >£1000 a month due to the aftermath of christmas but its interesting to note that the newer bonds are my winners ... been buying since may last year .. a win from the early bonds would instill more confidence

same question again ? has anyone ever heard of a big winner .... id accept any scource as a positive .... seems very very odd that i cant even find a newspaper reporting a winner .
  • my friend's dad won 5000 about 3 years ago on a holding of £5000, but then he does as well as my friend who has a holding of 30000.

  • how come we are only limited to a holding of £30,000? isn't that quite low?
  • I WON £50

This is my first draw and I have £1000. So chuffed. That is 5% interest tax free. WOW

The best way to think of PB's is not as an investment but as a flutter. The amount that you are gambling is the opportunity cost - that is about 4.5% of your holding per year that you could have got by putting the cash into a savings account. On large holdings (say 5 figures) you are virtually certain to win some prizes and some people like me prefer to win occasional £50 or £100 prizes rather than see 4.5% added in interest once a year because it is more exciting.

I agree with webwiz - a flutter rather than an investment. My Mother has around 24K in PB, and averages about a 6% return on them (which, tax free, is better than she could get anywhere else) BUT the thing that is important to her is getting that letter saying "you've won". It's funny, following a stroke she has almost no short-term memory (can't remember what was said 30 seconds ago) but she did remember that she'd won £100 this month. For her (and me) that's worth the possibility of low rate of return.

Hmm.... you would think that National Savings would want the publicity (provided the winner was willing, and they can't all be publicity shy). The best I could find was at http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/saving-and-banking/article.html?in_article_id=401907&in_page_id=7 where an unnamed pensioner was a winner and at http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/saving-and-banking/article.html?in_article_id=402676&in_page_id=7 where again there are no names. It seems to be NS policy not to name names but this would be a useful cover if, repeat if, there were no big winners!

Well I have £1000 of premium bonds and have had them since about November 2005 so not that long really. I have won nothing yet but it's a nice way of saving, tax free. My niece was given £100 worth when she was born and has regularly won £50 (let's say about £250) on them.

My father has around £3,000 - £5,000 worth. He has won about 5 times or so.

I tried it and didn't win once so I just bailed out of it as I needed the cash.
