i used to work at coop ,the reductions were done before the doors opened on a sunday and staff always had 1st choice, in most cases the reductions were bigger because the items were bought at the end of the day when prices were at rock bottom ! and you got your staff discount on top of that.

Personally, I dont like fish, but can see the point, Imagine Harrods preparing to open its doors for the Jan Sales, and customers who have camped out all night to secure the best bargains, get to stare through the window whilst the Harrods staff have a shopping frenzy of their own, securing the best bargains are well cleared out before the doors are opened..
