I've started to make more soups, not just from the fact I then know what goes into them but also to take advantage fo yellow-stickered foods etc.

Two nights ago I made a variation on pea and ham. Below I thought I'd share my recipe and I've put in the costs too.

    Pea and Ham soup

    1x 500g bag of yellow split peas 39p (tesco's)
    2x small potatoes 7p (rough)
    4x carrots 10p (rough guess)
    1x veg stock cube 5p
    pinch of coriander 2p
    pinch of dried parsley 2p
good twist of black pepper 2p
sliced ham end (asked at deli counter) 30p

    Total cost 97p

I soaked the split peas overnight then added them to a pot of nearly boiling water, cubed the potato (skin and all), and added the carrots (whole) the stock cube and the herbs. I let this come up to the boil then let it simmer for over an hour. Then using a potato masher I mashed down everything in the pot, then diced the ham and put this in and let it simmer again for half an hour adding a bit more water (rough guess total water used was 3 litres maybe slightly more) when I thought it was becomming too thick.

I've started looking at the deli counter as I've noticed when they get to the end of something whatever is left is bagged up and yellow-stickied. Got some fab bargains this way.

In total this gave about 10 very large bowlfuls for under a quid. Anyone got any other soup recipes for under a quid?

I'm not sure if there's a specific thread with costings but this one has lots of recipes and tips...

    Soup recipes

..and I think the odd few among those mention costs.

    HTH :)

Other possible cheap soups might be found here:-

    Lentil soup

And if you use the carcase then pretty much every chicken soup shouldn't cost much:-

And finally - a few other soup threads to browse :)

    That sounds good!

I am making Beetroot Soup over the weekend, if it's good I'll post that for you. Bought uncooked beetroots this morning, they cost 55p for a pound.

My faves are Curried Parsnip, Leek & Potato and Carrot, Tomato & Orange.

  • My standby is a pack of dried broth mix, it's great for adding to a chicken bones and veg box left overs.
HM mushroom soup is a favourite of mine.

    Yes, literally!

I am going round a friend's house this Saturday for a pre-Christmas dinner, we all have to make one dish and I have to make the starter for 10 people.

I was thinking of soup but could someone suggest some soup receipes which are simple, tasty and CHEAP please? :D

    Thanks
  • Simple quick and delicious but not too cheap.
steam 3/5 (dependent on thickness) Asparagus tips per person, when cooked wrap each bundle of 4 tips in a slice of Parma style ham (Aldi/Lidl) or ordinary ham if you prefer. Pour over some cheese sauce either a Colemans packet or you could make from scratch if you prefer, sprinkle a bit of chopped parsley to look pretty.
