The depreciation on cars scares the hell out of me!

I bought my car 3 years ago and if I sold her tomorrow I know I would make a 100% profit on her no problem. ;) Old cars are great. :)

Unfortunately I have a 1994 Skoda Favorit estate which isn't particularly sought after, and they're pretty much worth hardly anything at the moment. Based on the price performance of the older Skoda models I suspect the value may begin to rise in about 8 to 10 years time, in which time I will probably have done away with it anyway.

Isn't it weird how new cars cost £6000 plus, with people paying silly money for extras, metallic paint and finance. Eventually there's a point in time (often around 14 years later) where you can't pay people to take them off you (and the scrap yards are full of them) even if the car was ridiculously expensive new, then eventually later they go up in value.

I do feel lots of people are rather silly buying new cars on expensive finance when there's so many good second hand ones out there very cheap. You have a choice with cars, but not with homes unfortunately. But to be honest I'd rather people were all snobby about cars wanting new all the time, as it means more cheap cars for me :D

@ anewman... no disrespect to you or your car my friend, but I very much doubt that any skoda will go up in value...

Only "classic" cars tend to go up in value and in my opinion Skoda have not made any such cars.....

Like I said, thats nothing against Skoda, I think the same applies to lots of other car brands.

As for new over second hand and snobbery, its all horses for courses... my GF does a lot of driving for work, often at night and I wanted something that was safe and reliable for her... she loved her old Fiat Cinquecento but it felt like it was made of playdough.

Also, my uncle is a mechanic so whenever our cars (both 8 years old or more) went wrong, we got family rates on repairs and knew we could trust my uncle to only fix what needed fixing...

Now we live away from our family and don't know the area well and don't feel we can trust most garages. Therefore we wanted a new car for the GF which was covered on waranty and so wouldn't need repairs (except warranty)

@ matt1987, the new car smell is amazing... it might sound funny but it tastes disgusting though.... when you are in the car and breath through your mouth, you can taste the newness....

my skoda roomster is priceless , and i have every intention of driving her till she needs to retire like the fabia before her, then find a nice quiet couple that stay within 60, she can certainly go some.

You sound like my GF with her Cinq... I was only allowed to sell to a nice old couple that would just use her a couple of times a week for short runs to the shops...

No chavs to put naff spoilers on, no young drivers that would crash her...

GF insisted telling all potential buyers the cars name and how lovely she is and how she gets upset on hot days and overheats...
