I used rated people as well, but I have canceled my account because I lost lots of money. Every time to get clients details you have to pay the money £5-£20, and plus you pay membership every 3 months £40+vat. You pay for the details, but there is no garantee that you receive this job, and this fee is not refundable. Finally when you get one job, you work just to cover the cost paid to get the previous job details.
I use now yourworkman.co.uk, and I don't have to pay any fees for clients details and there is membership fee. I think its fair. Its not that many jobs you can get, but you don't loose a penny.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker Mortgage-free Glee!
I posted a job on ratedpeople too recently. It was for my bathroom refit. I too had people from around 30 odd miles away. I also had a couple of them scratching their heads when looking at my new shower and one wanted to take away the instruction book to study. I couldn't find anyone on there who was reasonably local or instilled any confidence in me that they would be able to do the job.

I then came across mybuilder so put it on there. That seemed a lot better in that there were some local people and their feedback was good. I had 3 people round and all seemed well - 1 took 8 days to come back with a quote and the others haven't at all!

One of them told me that mybuilder charges them 5% of the jobs value. Bit excessive I thought. What you have to do apparently as a customer is cancel the job off there and deal direct with the workman to avoid that charge. They must have to take that fee into account when quoting a job.
Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j

I recently paid £41.12 for a wall rebuild offering a budget of between £15-30k. Jobs like this are like rocking horse droppings...or rarer.

The phone number was a no go, the address was a Hospice who had never heard of the customer, it was a no lead. I queried it, RP investigated, then they offered me a one lead credit in return. I stated I wanted credits to the tune of £41.12, they said it is not company policy to do this.

In short, I rang Consumer Direct (trading standards) and they stated that RP are in breach of contract. I paid for a service which was not supplied, the one lead credit does not count, it is the monetary value that is to be refunded, although they are under no obligation to give it in cash.

RP still maintain that I have got all I will be getting, so I have given them 5 days to refund me or Trading Standards have said they will look into the case for me.

Perhaps if enough of us go this route, RP will have to tighten up thier act.

Smothy, please keep us informed as to how you get on..!

I too had the same problem with them when they agreed a lead i had bought was an non existant number, but as you said they just credited me with a free lead, i just made sure the new lead wasn't for less value..!

Surely the way forward for them is to take a percentage of the quoted price once you have securred & completed the job, or is that just too simple..?!!
  • I used Rated People to get someone to refit our bathroom. The person we used had got good reviews on line and with an address given and great photos posted of other jobs we thought we were safe. How wrong we were!! SBC Bathrooms (Steve Barkway) has taken advances for materials amounting to thousands of pounds and run away with our money. A job that should have taken 10 days and 5 weeks in and we have no bathroom barring three badly tiled walls and to make matters worse the boiler Steve moved has been condemned by British Gas and Gas Safe as Steve was not qualified to move it and made a bodge job of it. It was chucking out carbon monoxide and could have killed us! So we have lost over £6000 and Steve gave false addresses both on the web site and to us in person. I rated Steve badly on the site and the rating was removed! I did it again and called Rated People to complain about how they have recommended someone without running the most basic of checks and they have so far not responded! These people are clearly simply out to make money and do not care if they are aiding and abetting conmen to nick money off people. I have had no hot water for over 2 weeks and no bathroom for 5 weeks. I will have to now dip into what savings I have left to try and get the boiler fixed and try to get my money back via the legal system. Let's hope it is not as unreliable as the contractors recommened on Rated People!! Ratde people you are seriously doing us a grave disservice - shame on you.
  • I used rated people after a series of bad builders and didnt want any more shoddy work. I mistakenly thought that builders had ito be trading legally with builders insurance and were vetted before they used this site. Only got one quote. Unaware to me, the construction team I used for a major project from Rated People were getting some of their 'skilled' workers by advertising on rated events themselves, so they didnt know the workmanship of the people they were using. Later had to have the new flooring pulled up and new units removed to repair leak due to pipes not joined correctly, (Insurers dont cover for bad workmanship) skirting boards pulled off as nailed through and penetrated damp proof tanking membrane (damp specialist says I should sue) and the electric certificates never arrived and the wiring isnt compliant. Not to mention numerous smaller 'snags'. Its really difficult when you dont have recommendations to go on which site/trader to trust.

I have just been ****** by these scam artists I wish I had seen this "Rated people"scam merchants thread before I fell for it last week.

A plasterer was supposed to come on saturday and sunday to do a job, all he did was dump 4 bags of plaster in my living room and now I'm told he has gone on holiday for 2 weeks.

AVOID THE RATED PEOPLE SITE LIKE THE PLAGUE:mad:
