No - you don't need a licence for this.

I don't believe that is correct advice!

Apologies, I should have made it clear that this is a grey area.

TVL have previously talked about streaming TV in terms of whether it is being shown simultaneously over the air in the UK or not. If not, then no licence was required. This stems from the definitions in the legislation.

The wording seems to have been simplified, even though there has been no change in the law.

Therefore, grey area - people will have to ask TVL.

IANAL, but my interpretation of what the legislation says is that streaming any version(s) of live broadcast channels that are not broadcast within the UK is permissible without a licence. This is based upon definitions within the 2004 TV Licensing Regulations.
  • I live in shared housing. I don't watch any live TV and rarely watch any catch up TV either. I don't own a TV just a laptop.
I have just received a letter to "The legal occupier" and it isn't directly to me it says "Dear Sir/Madam"
Do I have to pay for a license?

Go on the TVL website and buy one to start from today's date I would have thought. Personally I don't bother.

If you buy it in person from a Paypoint outlet, it should start from the 1st of the month. Or you could try phoning TVL and telling them you have been away.

Usually they want proof that you have been away. They think they have some sort of authority or something. :rotfl:
  • i phoned tv licence people and explaned the situation, they said it was ok to be away three months but must let them know before applying for a new licence so as to start from new date rather than three months previous and he could do it on that phone call or go online, but said he would note it on his computer,i opted to go online later, when i went online to apply i could not find a start date so decided to cancel application, phoned tvl the next day explained the situation again and was told that there was nothing on the computer to say i had phoned previousley and if i had of bought the licence online the day previous it would have automaticly backdated three months,so the moral of the story is to phone the b******s
  • last years licence was bought from a paypoint shop and was backdated by tvl when the licence was posted to me!!! also mentioned this on the recent phone call but the would not refund their last years mistake, its big brother at its worst run by ex nazi's
