Hi everybody,
I have arrived to the UK not too long time ago and I am not an addicted TV watcher. That was amazing news for me that everybody who has TV in the UK have to pay significant money to monopoly broadcaster. :T
But now I want to see BBC TV, especially to improve my English, so I am going to buy a TV set and a license.
But I am not sure I will need it for one year, probably for a few months. Will it be possible to cancel my license then and receive the rest of money? Is there any cancellation fee? Is there a possibility that Crapita will knock every evening at my door after I cancel a license? Are there any other possible problems?
Thanks in advance.0 -

I have read through the letters the site owner has received firstly with amusement, and then almost disbelief that a company can resort to such blatant lies and intimidation, as well as some potentially illegal activities (eg data protection act compliance), against people who have broken no law whatsoever. If a company of wheel clampers (for example) pursued someone like that I am sure someone would have a strong case for harassment.
Full credit to the site owner to sticking to his guns. The section "Do not write below this line" is hilarious! It almost makes me want to get rid of the telly, cancel the licence and get involved in some TVL baiting.0 -
I have no TV, or TV card on computer, or anything for watching live TV. So I have no license, despite receiving a letter about a threatened visit every year.
However, my estranged husband sometimes stays here on a Saturday night, and watches Match of the Day late in the evening on his laptop. I have asked him not to, but he says there is no way they can track it on a laptop.
So should I strictly ask him to pay for a license if he wants to watch TV here? Or should he be covered by his home one - if he has one, but that's his problem. He is not down as a resident here and pays no council tax. Or is it OK because it is a laptop?
Although, having read your thread, I would now feel confident to refuse entry if anyone came to check if I had a TV, my ex-husband has a way of doing as he pleases, but I would rather stay within the law!
Many thanks

Some years ago, when I moved and didn't have a TV, I kept receiving nasty letters in all shades of red demanding that I pay up or call some premium rate number which I can't remember now. I never bothered to do either. Then they started calling me, and demanding my debit card details to setup up direct debit. No polite queries asking whether I even had a telly at home. Their nerve... They even came home, but I never let them in.
I wonder how much money is spent doing all this... and this is what our license fee is used for? The BBC should play on a level ground with other broadcasters. If it can't, it should wind up! This kind of business shouldn't be allowed to survive.
I have never had anyone behaving so rudely! Though I can think of some other government agencies who behave similarly. They probably think they have a God given right over the commons on the street! I hope they rot in hell...Look after your pennies, and your pounds will look after themselves!0 -
Could I draw your attention to the letter headed:-
"Paying for BBC Broadband"

This is really going beyond taking the pi$$. I am getting angrier and angrier the more I read about the BBC and their licence fee.
Out of interest, has anyone ever challenged the legality of TVLA practices in court? Also, are there any up-to-date websites about chosing not to watch live TV? All the ones I have come across don't seem to have been updated since 2005ish.0 -
Then the BBC spend our money (150k in this case) for a company to make an annoying advert like that new East Enders one where Bianca's singing to the Jackson 5 - horrible advert!0
