In the process of moving out of my flat & in with a relative.
They already have a TV licence so i will no longer require mine. Had a check on the TVL website & they only offer refunds of 3, 6 or 9 month periods.
Ive paid up front for the full year, £145.50 & I will basically lose out on 2 months worth of a refund due to the timing & when my licence expires.
How do they get away with this? Surely if ive paid in full for a service then i should be refunded in full for non use of said service?
Totaling it, its prob only 20-30quid but its the principle & its always better in your pocket than some1 elses.

If you set up a direct debit you pay for the first year in the six months and then you pay for more after that...
I have a years contract for my new employer so won't be needing a tv license for '2 years' where I will be working. Am I within my rights to cancel my direct debit after I've paid for it all?0 -
i'm not even sure why this thread is in this part of the forum ??I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

Most people will watch their TV in their home, where do you watch yours? The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

this is mainly a diy section of the forum, i have seen posts here moved to another section & for the life of me i couldn't understand why as i thought this was the right place, but IMO this isn't the right section for thisI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

The best way is to ignore any letters you get from the TVL and not bother with them at all.0 -
I just recently moved into the YMCA after my long term relationship broke down. My question is, I currently have a tv and laptop both of which aren't connected to the residential aerial.
I use my laptop mainly for networking and gaming and have an Xbox hooked up to my tv in which I mainly game and watch dvds. Now the question is, if I use interactive services on my Xbox such as Sky (using my mums account, which she has let me) and BBC iPlayer - Do I have to pay for a license.
I just checked and for the first 5 months they want over £20 a month for one which to me seems extortionate for something I will hardly be using (only for the occasional soap and live sports events.)
Thanks.0 -

You need a TV license if you are watching live TV as it's being broadcast on any device. If Sky on your Xbox is live then you'll need one.
Catch up/On Demand services such as iPlayer don't require a license since that isn't live. It's not illegal to have a TV or computer without a license but if they are set up to receive a live broadcast (ariel plugged in, channels tuned etc) then you'd be breaking the law.
You are under no obligation at all to cooperate with TV Licensing 'officers' or reply to any letters received. They always automatically assume you are breaking the law if you are unlicensed. The 'officers' have no more right to come into your home to search for evidence against you than I do. Their main goal is to obtain any evidence that could be used to prosecute you so it's best to say nothing to them and close the door if they visit - even if you legally don't require a license. We’ve had to remove your signature.
