Anyone know how you work out your refund from tv licence?
My current one is valid until June this year, although I'm still paying DD. At the beginning of April I'm moving into my boyfriends flat so won't need the licence any more. Just wondering how much I *should* get back?
Thanks!Became Mrs Scotland 16.01.16Became homeowners 26.02.16

Not everyone has a television on a consistent basis.
I have a television yet it stopped working for a month and could not afford to have it repaired so I put it in my cupboard for four months and instead watched my partner's TV in his flat - he pays for his licence too but we have different flats from each other. I was still paying for my licence during the time I was without a television as did not get around to cancelling it. I have mental health issues and struggle opening post at times and let things build up.
Anyway, I tried to get a refund for the duration that I was without a licence and filled in the refund form they sent me. It said to supply evidence (evidence in their words covered original television licence and some proof of address like a letter). I did not have the original licence but did download a copy of the original one from their website and as I had paid via direct debit through them, they do know that I had a licence.
They said that I could not be refunded due to lack of evidence, yet in what capacity do they mean?. If it is because I failed to provide the original licence is absurd as I had my licence number, a copy of it on their website and proof of paying for the licence.
Some years back, I had the same dilemma yet they still refunded me after I explained that I did not have my original copy as had moved and genuinely mislaid it. It was done over the telephone and no one asked me for evidence, so why after producing recently albeit it through copies of original licence with a legitimate licence number, do they write and refuse a refund?
It appears that they make decisions based upon discretion if this is my experience!:mad:0 -
I think you could only get away with this in the UK.

I moved out of my house in Glasgow in August 2009 & disconected all of my services as you do when moving, moved into my brothers
house in London where I still live, ok so far, on reviewing my bank statement a few months ago I realised I was still being
deducted for my tv licence at my former address (yes a numpty for not noticing before),so I wrote, emailed & phoned TV licence people
to ask for a refund for the last 2 years, they then sent me 72.00pounds but said they could'nt refund me the full amount without
evidence ie. Final energy bill, water bll etc. now as I explained it was over 2 years ago & I don't have those any more, so anybody
got any advice or is it a lost cause.
thanks guys0 -

If you have no evidence that you moved out two years ago I would say lost cause. Lesson learnt for you though, bills imo should be kept for ~5years to avoid this sort of thing and give you proof if people come after you for money too!

Another interesting point that has not been mention so far is that they cannot look through your windows (assuming ground floor) to see whether you are watching tv as a warrant from the court would be required enabling them to do this and as such cannot be used as evidence. I am unaware of any such warrants having been issued but keen to hear if this is not the case.0

You don't need one if you're only watching DVDs or using it for gaming (though you'll need to sign a declaration form for this).
You don't need to do anything of the sort.0 -

Stop writing and phoning, then ignore them.
As for the letters, keep them for your posterior.
BTW. That wasn't a spelling mistake.0
