Guys, this bit on the TV Licence page is inaccurate:
If you watch a TV set, you need a licence. Simple as that
Nope it's not as simple as that. I have a TV set, with a PS3 attached. My TV is detuned and no aerial is fitted. The PS3 does not have any add on to produce Freeview. It is used as a gaming monitor or for watching DVDs. I'm legal.0 -
Is the TV licence subject to VAT. I've just bought a new house, not moved in yet and will need a licence when I move it. Should I buy it this side of the new year or wait? Does the licence also run from the date you bought it or from the start of the month in which you buy it? Any help would be appreciated.0

There is no VAT charged on a TV licence.

You can use PS3 to watch iplayer etc through a broadband connection e.g. wifi so if you use that watch live TV then you would need a licence, however the mere fact that the TV is capable of receiving live TV in some way is no reason force anyone to have to have a licence.0 -

Just stop watching/recording TV programmes as they are broadcast. No need for a licence then.0 -

Another bit of advice is to take your name off their database.
As in future you will get visits and letters (threatograms).
When they visit your door and ask who you are, before answering ask who they are. When they reveal that they are TV goons, just say "no thanks" and shut the door.
Tell them nothing, they need a name to take you to court (tick the box on the electoral role).
They need evidence to get a warrant....tell them nothing and they cant do nothing, dont believe the hype they are powerless. You have to consent to Act to be governed, dont contract with them.

I have had the letters and visits.
Their "database" is rubbish as it appears not to be up to date - ever.0 -

Very interesting reading - I learned that TVL are in fact the BBC!! They are not a contracted out agency, they ARE the BBC! And that their sophisticated "detector vans" are empty :rotfl:
I am completely against the TV licence, it made sense once upon a time when you could only watch the BBC or even when 50% of channels on the box were BBC1 and BBC2. The concept of a TV licence is completely outdated.
Imagine having to pay your local car dealer EVERY YEAR for driving a car that they do not sell.
No sense whatsoever!!
Totally agree...it is not a licence for TV..it is for BBC channels..and I do NOT watch BBC so forcing me to pay for a service I dont use is EXTORTION...i have a tv...we watch only arabic language channels from a satalite dish we paid alot of money for...i use my TV for dvds non bbc channels and whatever..but NO BBC..so why should i pay...its completely wrong...i dont aggree with it at all...if bbc want a fee for their programmes then only charge poeple who watch...scramble their channel and open it to those who pay...I DONT WANT BBC ON MY TV...0 -

Common tactic is to be "nice and friendly", and ask you to "buy a Licence" and "don't do it again" - then you get a summons because by agreeing to this you have "admitted" your guilt.
Much as I dislike TVL, I dislike people who sponge off the rest of us by not buying a Licence even more - parasites ! Have a nice day in Court.
eXCUSE ME...ARE YOU FOR REAL ...How is it sponging off you..you pay x amount for your tv licence regardless of who chooses they dont want to pay for a service they dont use...0
