TV Licence article Discussion

  • It says on the 'apply for a refund' part of the site that you may have to provide evidence for a refund. How does this apply to the fact that I will no longer be watching live tv? The whole site seems to be designed to make it as awkward as possible to cancel the licence.

It doesn't. Giving up watching TV broadcasts is the one reason that doesn't (cannot) have any evidence requirement.

The law gives the BBC the authority to set the Ts & Cs of a Licence, so presumably that covers the steps necessary to cancel one.
  • Ok, I've filled in the online refund form. It asks me to print out the pre-filled refund form. I guess I have to send this off to them by snail mail now to get a refund?
Sorry for all the questions - I'm paranoid about getting something simple wrong and it comes back to bite me on the !!!!!

Yes - fill in the form and send it back.

I usually recommend that people phone in to cancel. If your reason for cancelling is giving up watching TV broadcasts, that gets it done in one call.

    TVL are open tomorrow (8:30am - 1pm). 0300 790 0368
  • It asks me to sign the form for the refund. I keep seeing posts about not signing anything - is it ok to sign the refund form? I guess I don't need to fill in the comments form on the reasons for cancelling.

I take it they'll ask me on the phone my reason for cancelling - should I tell them?

Because of the removal of the free over-75 Licence? Yes, I would definitely tell them that.

The important thing though, is that you tell them that you won't be watching/recording TV broadcasts or using iPlayer. They very much like to hear that people know what the rules are when they cancel their Licences.

I second Cornucopia's advice to cancel the DD through your bank if your quarterly payment is about to be claimed. I paid monthly, so was paying for the following years licence way in advance which I don't think happens with quarterly (but I stand to be corrected). I cancelled on New Years Eve 2010 which was a Friday, and was treated as not having a licence from 1st Jan as I could only get refunds for a full month (I got the 3 months I expected to be refunded, and it didn't take them long to do so).

“ ...plus it's unlikely that any of the programmes she likes ( mostly freeview channels) would be available that way.

Just off the top of my head:

    - ITV Hub = ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, ITV Be.

    - All4 = C4, E4, More 4, the occasional film from Film4, Walter Presents.

    - My5 = C5, 5 Spike, 5 USA, Paramount.

    - UKTV Player = Dave, Drama, Home, Yesterday and Really. (I think Home & Really are due to leave).

There are more than that, since My5 has a bundle of other content from various sources.

Thank you - that's way more than I thought. She doesn't have a computer or tablet, though - and I can't see her getting one just to avoid paying the licence fee. Bless her, at 83 I think she's entitled to be set in her ways !
