I think it is a shame that the step son feels like a visitor in his own (albeit part time) home though :(

Do the local authority have to house you in such a big house as three of your "children" are no longer children, infact how long will they be living with sounds strange they are holding out for a four bed house for your family

council houses should be made available for 2 years to get people on the straight and narrow. not subsidised living for life.
  • Wow, I guess the 'judgemental' people that posted earlier have been put firmly in their place.

Can I just point out that not all of us here are homeowners. My OH and I have to rent privately because we can't afford a house either. We don't expect handouts from the government or council, though.

No one's got the right to judge you or anyone else (though you'll find it happens a lot on the internet I'm afraid), but just remember that you too are making a judgement on others here. It doesn't sound as though you are in a very bad position, in all honesty, either. You have two bedrooms for you, your partner and your child. It is not at all surprising or unexpected that an occasional visitor has to stay on the couch, and if you were to get a 3-bed house just for that, it would mean that someone who could need it even more would be losing out. It sounds as though you have a reasonable situation, to be honest, and I'd not expect the council to provide more for you than you already have.

If you want something bigger, it might be a good idea to think about looking into ways to up your income - for instance, can you or your partner get more overtime, can your partner put his business on hold while money is tight and get a full-time job instead, can you get on any free or subsidised learning courses to get a qualification which will help you get a more highly-paid job? The sooner you think about these things the sooner you will be able to move out of a council house and get back into private renting - and from there, to owning your own home again. Good luck.

Wow! I really can't believe what I have just read! I'm amazed by some of the replies and how nasty they are. Does anyone here know the full story or even care? I don't know where other people live but where I live, there's no way I could afford a mortgage on £17k per year for a family! These people are not sponging they are surviving. They simply cannot afford to rent privately or buy a house.

cant the 20, 19 and 18 year old find themselves somewhere else to live or have the apron strings yet to be cut?

My kids are 21 and 19 and still live with us and they will continue to live with us for a long time it seems. The way rents are going they will not be able to find a place. My youngest income will not support a rent plus all the other living costs he would incur. My older one is not yet working but will start this summer after graduating but only part time as continuing with studies.

So sometimes it is more of a cannot move away from home than a don't want to. Also if the kids have no income one cannot just throw them on the street.
