trouble is being a newbie and an old fart ie not used to text shorthand and to computers generally. I also find the answers and the questions gobbledegook
I have to randomly search for 'threads' (if that is what they are called) that I have posted on Even this one several times as I have left it to follow a bit of advice and get lost and can't get back

    I'm advanced? Thanks :D

I'm that advanced I kept looking in the mailbox and seeing replies to this topic and thinking "noooo, please don't get all techie on me" :D

I can see you've had some good advice since my post, but honestly BG, I'm just the same as you, learning all the time ;)

I'm an advanced insomniac that asks a load of dumb questions BG :D

I'm warming to this topic though, it shoud be good to get back to some basics. You'd be surprised how many people don't know them, it's just that they tend to get asked, and answered, in various topics as and when a query pops up.

A for instance would be when the M&S sale was on and another user suggested we all looked in our 'history'. I'd never heard of it before, but soon learned lol.

It's the little icon that looks like a clock on the toolbar, the one with an arrow pointing anti-clockwise. :D but quite a few of us didn't know. We did after someone posted a picture of it and where it was on the pc lol.

Good luck, I can't wait for the lessons to start :)

There's things in 'All Programmes' I daren't look at, so I probably use 5% :D

But I've learned how to change bmps into jpegs because of a tip from someone on here. I love learning new things.

I'm going to find out what the 'Edit with Notepad' thing does (on the toolbar next to the printer icon) :D

    Unless someone else can help??

Could somebody please explain what Active X controls are, why we should or should not have them, how and what does one do! This subject is mentioned in the FirefoxV thread, but it is all greek to me " I do know that I receive an e-mail from one organisation, which tells me that I am running Active X but I haven't the foggiest what that means.

I didn't see this answered, so here goes :D

It is a small component/application that can be embedded into other Windows applications like Internet Explorer. Kind of like a Java applet or Flash animation. The problem here is that ActiveX controls can do pretty much anything they want to your system, once you click the "Yes, I'd like to download and run that".

You can disable them in Internet Explorer. I would, if you're still using it.

    :D

I asked a similar question (but not put as well lol) on another forum a while back. It wasn't until someone actually posted a picture of what it looked like that I understood.

I'd post a picture of one but don't know how! :D

    I didn't word that right (again :D)

I meant I didn't even know what the Active X looked like, as in the wizard thing that appears.

That probably makes no sense whatsoever :D

I getcha, I think! The dialog that appears, asking if you want to install <something or other>. Note that you won't get this appear with properly signed controls (controls that Windows thinks are safe) or controls where you have clicked "Trust all content from <so and so>". Something like this:
