I am involved with a charity, and we have recently set up a website. We have been struggling to get it come up on Google (not enough hits/links) and I've been told that by having a blog, you sort of get priority and boosted higher on the lists. I don't want to spend time trying to get my head round how to set up a blog if this isn't true (if you see what I mean).

PS - I've noticed that I have to change my user cp every time I log on to get the number of threads per page increased, although all the other settings remain the same each time - has anyone else had this? ???

Why not try it? It's a doddle :D

No HTML needed by the way. Just name it so it mentions the charity might work? Hardly takes any time and I'm one of the least techie minded people on here lol.

    Can't help with the P.S. - sorry :D
  • Thanks Sofa... I'm going to give this a crack seeings as this really does seem simple! :D

BTW, I sorted out the PS thanks! ;)

  • I'm thinking of getting a Freeview box, part of the blurb is that you may need a new "wideband" arial. Does any one have any exprience of this, ie gone against the advise and used your normal loft/outside arial ? I'm told that I can definatly receive freeview but this new arial is recommended. Is this just a minor point to get you to buy a new arial when the old one may be sufficient ?

    Thanks is advance.

if you are in a strong siganl area you may not need an aerial upgrade, would try it first to see if the box works as the new aerial (a decent one) is about £45

Could somebody please explain what Active X controls are, why we should or should not have them, how and what does one do! This subject is mentioned in the FirefoxV thread, but it is all greek to me " I do know that I receive an e-mail from one organisation, which tells me that I am running Active X but I haven't the foggiest what that means.

I think sofa_sogood sounds advanced compared to me
trouble is being a newbie and an old fart ie not used to text shorthand and to computers generally. I also find the answers and the questions gobbledegook
I have to randomly search for 'threads' (if that is what they are called) that I have posted on Even this one several times as I have left it to follow a bit of advice and get lost and can't get back

Did the number per page bit great thanks

Haven't a scooby about 'subscribed threads' ..what they are, how they work and how do I make use of them? They sound as if they might help if I knew

I find the shorthand totally frustrating partly 'cos I f orget it
Eg I know that LOL has been explained before but I have forgetten it could be 'lots of Love' I dare not risk looking for it or I will get lost again

    what is it when people sign D;

    what is &
What is " ( if it is quote...is it not easier using quotation marks ?)

I hope that this is the correct place to ask and thanks to sofa for starting the process Fingers crossed that this does post as I have tried before and lost several
And PS what is the title bar above the box I type in ?

    Enough for now methinks

BG Porgy  ( why words rather than the smiley ) WOW it is a smiley on the page

BG it was me passing on "lots of love", except it was in fact "laughing out loud" but obviously you didn't find your way back to the thread to find my reply, nor found my pm to you yet ;)

Along the top you will find a bar with Main Site, Chat, User CP, FAQ, Members List, Calendar, New Posts, Search, Quick Links and Log Out.

User CP is your Control Panel where you can make loads of changes as to how to view the forums. FAQ is a summary of frequently asked questions on how to use the forums and post on them where you should find lots of answers.

A Beginner's Guide to the forum is a work in progress at the moment which should help you through but feel free to pm me (private message) by clicking on my user name where it will give several options, one of which is private message the user :)

    HTH (hope this helps) :D

A winking grinning smiley face is symbolised by...

;D (lean your head towards your left shoulder and look)

colons : or semi colons ; are used to show eyes (semi colons are winking).

the letter o is occasionally used as a nose

parenthesis are used for smiles or frowns ( ) or capital D for big grin

so all of the following are different faces:

    ;o) ;D and so on.

Nowadays you can just select the smiley you want from the drop down list when you type a message (here are some):
;):( etc, or you can just type semi colon followed by close parenthesis for the first one, colon open parenthesis for the second one or three question marks in a row for the third one

The & you see on some of the threads are from when MSE was using a different program for us to write our messages on. When they switched to the new program it didn't like some of the bits in the messages and changed them to these. Basically it just means and.

If you type between these characters [ ]
    QUOTE=BG Porgy

and then type hello, hello, hello

then type again between these characters [ ]

    /QUOTE

    you will see the following:

    hello, hello, hello

Which looks quite nice IMO (in my opinion) but quotation marks are fine too!

i really do appreciate the time you took to do the jack and Jill versions for me
It really is mind boggling I will stick to the queen's english for now ..I find that hard enough as it is. Even Doric is easier !! A wee jobbie in the N east means something totally different here than in Edin
