What is 'Ping'. I know its used in online games as I use them all the time but im not sure what it is. I think it may have somethig to do with lag??
Is it good to have a high or low 'ping'. someone please explain.
Ping is a small program that sends out a signal to another computer or website then waits for a response (or echo). It times how long it took for the echo to come back. A lower time is better as it tells you that it was a quicker round trip from your computer to the website, then back to your computer again. If there is no response, you know the website or computer is not available. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I think I've found where I need to be now Godders, and I daren't sabotage Martin's thread again.
Basically I wondered if there was a novice section (not necessarily for me btw lol), but time and again the same questions are asked. Is it because we aren't 'reading the manual' sort of thing?
The typical one is cutting and pasting. Another is how to save a web page.
Maybe there's too many questions (or they've already been answered elsewhere?) but try as I might to follow the techies on here, there's times I don't understand the question let alone understand the answer
Hope that makes some sense? I've just noticed that there's a glossary btw, so that's a big help. It just seems a shame that some people aren't getting the best from their pc's. I'm not bothered so much, I can more or less do what I need to do, which is post and e-mail, but I remember a time when I'd read everything while I was online, and that was when it was pay per minute lol.
Maybe an idiot's guide, (but better worded lol), but there probably is one?
I'm struggling with the navigation of the board at the moment, and I'm not new to the 'net, so it struck me that there might be a few more technophobes like me about
If I ever get an error or anything, I daren't ask now because I just KNOW I won't understand the jargon I'll be askedThat's the best analogy I can give.
Thanks for reading *smile* (can't do the ordinary smileys at the mo - too many!)0 -
Sofa - welcome, and put your feet up. I'll try to find a guide to the new forum which will bring together the old and the new (unless someone beats me to it). If there isn't one I'll write it.
As far as general techie terms go just ask - "what does xxx mean" (ie. To save a web page click on the 'File' menu then 'Save As') that was the whole point of the thread.0 -

Thanks Godders
This is a typical of me (and maybe others?) I had to put this on mail alerts so I could find it again!
But please don't go to any extra trouble doing what you suggested just for me! rofl.
On a serious (well as serious as this gets) note, am I draining the board's sytem by having more than a couple of windows open? I've got a feeling I'm not using the site as others do. I'm permanently lost at the mo and I saw someone with a bit of savvy asking about how to view new posts and it was like I'd developed dyslexia. The question was the same as I was asking - how do we view new posts etc, but I got lost in tech speak lol. I'm just wondering if others are feeling the same ....
Maybe it's just me *smile* (webby still won't let too many icons thru')0 -

1. Can anyone explain the principals of 'blog'. Apparently a way of getting higher up on web search engines (I'm pretty vague on the whole thing!)
2. Also, how can I change the settings on this new chat forum system so I can view more threads per page.
Thanks in advance to you all

Only that it's an online diary that anyone can have and that other people can read if it's not private
Other than that I can't help - sorry.0 -

Thanks Sofa and Derrick for your speedy answers - I've now changed my profile and no longer need to keep changing pages - 4 is such a low default!
I'd still like to know if it's true if having a blog can boost you on the google search engine - I'm not sure if I've been fed a line on this one, but if it's true it seems a pretty easy solution...
PS to Sofa - I keep losing track of the threads I'm interested in and have just discovered (Thanks to Derricks tip) that you can default to get email notification on threads you reply on... might be handy I guess
Thanks again,

Thanks JB, I subscribe to whatever I post to now - that way I don't get lost
Re the google question, if you were to put up, for instance, a real name (I wouldn't recommend it personally lol), then Google usually finds it. But it can find most things. If I type my daughter's name into Google it's the top of the list, and where she works etc.
Can I ask why you need to know if it works or not?
Edited to add that even though I've a 'blog' that I don't use much, Google doesn't find my name because I don't use it in the blog.0
