On your Desktop (the page that appears when you boot up), there should be an icon for 'Dell Support Centre'. Double click on this to open, click on 'Self Help', then 'Troubleshooting', then 'Automated Scan'. Leave it alone while Scan is running and this could well identify and correct your problem.

IP address - a unique identifier for every machine onthe internet used in conjucntion with dns

An Ip address isn't Unique to say. The MAC address is the unique identifier for every machine on the internet & intranet.

Its the Devices that connect people to the internet (Modems, Routers, Servers etc.) that have Unique Ip Address's .

As in a office/home ip address are mostly the same. most homes use the (192.168.2.x or 192.168.1.x Scheme) and most Business's use (10.10.x.x or 10.10.10.x) scheme.

MAC Address - Media Access Control address.

By 'the Dell screen when I turn on' she means the BIOS logo screen - she's not getting as far as the desktop. I think it's F12 or F11 you can press on a Dell machine when booting to access the diagnostic partition, if you can't get into windows. Should be straightforward from there - click test on a few things and see how it goes :)

Not strictly true, previous versions of iTunes have been ran successfully with WINE including iPod synching.

Hipo iPod manager runs in linux and syncs etc.

strictly speaking every network device has a different MAC address, for example in my laptop i have a wireless card and a ethernet slot, both of which have separate MAC addresses although they are in the same machine.

also MAC addresses aren't always 100% unique and they can be changed

Basically, The SOHO connection is a software mechanism which is used to connect multiple computers to internet services using one physical connection. You are probably using it without knowing it, as the name suggests, at home or in a small office where a couple of pc's may be connected, along with a printer perhaps, either wirelessly or through ethernet cabling.

Yes they can be changed. But they are the only "code" to say that is unique on the world of the internet/intranet

What is SAP? How does it works? I have been seeing this acronym several times but I don't know the meaning.
