I think it may help if you made yourself clearer. I didn't understand your grammar at all.

I need to buy a new internal hard drive for my laptop, and I keep seeing things like IDE, ATA, SATA, PATA. Can someone tell me what these mean and what the difference is - and is there anything else to look out for?

the differnce is the interface for the conector betweent he drive and the motherboard. a SATA drive will not work on and IDE motherboard etc.

IDE and ATA PATA are the same sort of thing.

SATA is a newer faster type of interface.

to tell the differnce (in general) open the PC and if there is a wide grey cable from the Hard drive to the Motherboard then its going to be IDE, thin round cable means SATA.

    IDE:

Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.
