I need to buy a new internal hard drive for my laptop, and I keep seeing things like IDE, ATA, SATA, PATA. Can someone tell me what these mean and what the difference is - and is there anything else to look out for?0

the differnce is the interface for the conector betweent he drive and the motherboard. a SATA drive will not work on and IDE motherboard etc.
IDE and ATA PATA are the same sort of thing.
SATA is a newer faster type of interface.
to tell the differnce (in general) open the PC and if there is a wide grey cable from the Hard drive to the Motherboard then its going to be IDE, thin round cable means SATA.
IDE:
