hi just signed up to t mobile dongle, we want to use internet abroad to check our bank accounts have been told £7.50 for a mega bite, how long is that chap at car phone warehouse said about a minute!! Is he right, If so I think we may remain in ignorance.

Could be or might not. Depends on the speed where you're connecting and what exactly you're downloading. You could go through a megabyte in under 10 seconds at full speed with that dongle. If you're just downloading webpages with no pictures then obviously it'd last a lot longer because you're not downloading as much. As an example you're more than halfway to a megabyte from this one webpage you're looking at with all the graphics.

To give an analogy to explain why it's difficult to answer, it's a bit like being given the cost of travelling a mile and then asking how soon that mile would last. Of course it depends on how fast you're going and if you're actually travelling anwhere that's going to be at least a mile. A Megabyte is simply the amount of information so it's difficult to say how quickly you'll reach that level of information.

One thing I can say is that yes it is very expensive. I think many hotels abroad would have free wifi or at least for much cheaper, although you'd have to be careful about security.

Thanks for that Godders. So I can now put 2 films on one DVD great. :)

    Pete.

Erm not quite, you can effectively copy a DVD from source (an original film, without encryption i must add!) without compressing it.

ie. Most films are in DVD9 format (dual layer or 8.5gb) which is two DVD layers sandwiched together. Look on the back of a standard DVD movie, it will tell you this. Thats what the pause is halfway throughout the film, its the laser reading through to the next layer.

To copy such a film to standard DVD5 format (single layer or 4.7gb) you would need to compress the film to fit either by stripping out unnecessary foreign languages, compressing the video data or removing the original menus all together to save space. You can get software that does this for you, look around on the internet.

And before you think you can just go out and copy a film from your local Blockbuster, think again, most DVD films are encrypted and you will need decryption software to first remove the protection. I will not tell you how to do this as I am sure this behavior is not tolerated in these forums.

So the advantage of having a DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER is that you can copy most DVD9 format films without having to compress them, you get a like for like copy, or you can use it for backing up 8.5gb worth of files from your PC.

More info on this matter here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD

You will also need some DVD9 (dual layer) blank discs to obviously copy onto and personally I dont think they are that cheap really.
SVP is reasonably priced for blank media.

    Ping - 0
Ping uses ICMP which is a "network layer protocol" so should not realy be talked about with firewalls unless blocking port 7 for echo replies

The best way to describe ports is like a motorway with thousands of lanes. Each transport, for example web pages (http) has its own lain (Port 80). So think of a firewall as a road block only opening some lanes.

Woah, that's very expensive. Are you sure it's not £7.50 for a gigabyte (1,000 megabytes)?

    As a reference, I pay £7.50 a month for a 3GB limit (through 3 network).

Actually it can be £6/MB for Three's dongle as well. Remember the poster isn't using it in the UK.

  • Once you go past 3GB the charges will probably be astronomical ;)

On a mobile Opera Mini really helps squeeze more for your bandwidth, but that's not really suitable for desktops...

Check out NetMeter, it'll keep track of your bandwidth:

Can you tell me how I can remove the infecection from my documents saved on the disk so that I can open the documents and not affect my own computer.
My PC is not infected its only on these floppy disks taken from another PC.

I am able to find the infected files on my floppy disk using AVG but AVG is unable to remove
    it.

I would be very pleased to receive any help
