A port is also a service or application that is required to communicate. For example. The two common transmission protocols are UDP and TCP. Ports/protcols are defined by port numbers. The common ports are
HTTP - TCP 80
HTTPS/SSL - TCP 443
Ping - 0
SMTP - 25
FTP - TCP 21
DNS - UDP 53
Kerberos - TCP 88
There are 1000's.
Port 1-1024 are registered ports, ie they are defined for a particular protocol./service.
Ports >1025 are random, classed as high ports and can be used for any service.
These are what firewalls protect. For example if you need internet access your firewall is configured as
Source:Your PC
Destination: anywhere
Protocol: TCP 80 (HTTP)
This goes much deeper depending on the type of firewall used.0 -
