You could try boot fairs or your local freecycle group. Alternatively, I'm pretty sure I've seen the new versions at places like Argos.

    Hello OP,

I really like old fashioned kitchen scales too and they're much better than the spring kind, which always give up the ghost in the end!

I was given a set of old fashioned ones from Argos as a wedding present 20 years ago - scales are still going although the marriage foundered after 13 years - and they are fantastic. The older they get, the better they look.
I've bought some metric weights as they only came with imperial, and they are honestly one of my all-time favourite things in the kitchen.

Hope you can find new ones in the vintage style as I think that's your best bet.

    Hi all

I do not own a set of scales and would like to know what people here think are the best. Ideally I would like the old fashioned ones with weights, second hand would be great but don't know where to start looking (antique markets perhaps?) but even a nice modern set would do.

Any suggestions gratefully received. Thank you!

eBay :D I have a set similar to these, but with metric weights.

Hi all, thank you for your replies. I have seen some at Argos and I am tempted, but I have never been successful on Ebay so I am very reluctant to go there.

Will try Argos next time I go in, I want to see them before I buy them.

    Thanks again, Caterina x

I have simply got to recommend any by Salter (http://www.salterhousewares.com/salter_uk) with their 15 year guarantee.

My 2001 Microtronic Add & Weigh ones suddenly started eating batteries, even when they had supposedly switched themselves off. I e-mailed their customer service, who replied that as it was a 2001 model, they must obviously still be well within the guarantee, and that they would send me a replacement.

Then I got another e-mail, advising me that this particular model was no longer in production ... so please choose a replacement from the current range!

I now have shiny new Disc Add & Weigh scales, which have both automatic and a manual switch off.

What superb customer service. Just remember to scan the receipt, as the heat-printed ones fade.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Thank you Stephen Leak, for both the link and the sound advice.

I have looked at the link and they have some impressive scales - but not the ones with separate weights that I am looking for.

However I saw a model that looks really good and sturdy, the Stainless Steel Sweetie model and I might seriously consider it if I do not find my desired retro model. I am after a mechanical model not a battery operated one.

  • As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread on choosing scales ;)

  • I have a set of Lidls digital scales which were cheap but do the job well.

Snap! I actually really like them as they just 'do what it says on the tin' without any bells or whistles :)

I have a bright pink cheapo scale that I bought in Au Naturale years ago and have never needed to replace. It's surprisingly accurate for such a cheap one, and looks just like this Typhoon one. The ones with the weights are lovely but I think I'd find them too much of a faff rather than just dumping everything in a bowl.

I dread the day they stop making scales with imperial measurements. I just can't think in metric at all, it drives me nuts that most things you buy in shops these days only have the metric weight.
