Which Kitchen Scales ?

When I did my training we were advised to get scales with weights as they were the most accurate, I have had my salter scales for over 29 years, I have test wighed several times and they are still perfect, I do wipe the weights with a damp cloth and occasionally clean the scale pan with brasso, otherwise I just wipe it out when I have finished weighing. No batteries etc needed.......... and results are great.

They do take up more space than digital scales, but I prefer them for their accuracy.

are these types of scales still avalable to buy i have always wanted a set (remeber my mum having some when i was a little girl)

i have flat digital scales at the moment find them really handy and easy to store

I have a pair of *Old Fashioned* balance scales. DH bought them for me from M&S a couple of years ago, so they're definitely still available. They look lovely in my kitchen, but if I had my time again, I'd go for a flat type digital scale, with *add and weigh* facility. This is great when using the BM - you can weigh directly into the pan.

Mine is a top of the range Salter digital flat scale, (£50 in the sales) from more than five years ago.

Having worked in the food industry one way and another for quite a few years I was more than happy to discover that Salter had a domestic range since not only are their scales accurate and durable but they have good after sales service too.

I have a pair of the old fashioned balance scales too but my Mom managed to get me some metric weights for it as my xmas pressie so now I can use lbs and ozs or kgs/gs so its perfect

I did have digital scales and personally I couldnt get on with them as they were too accurate LOL I was forever adding a pinch of flour then removing a pinch of flour to try and get the right weight

I have digita scales, which I only use for very small amounts as last time I used them the battery died halfway through weighing stuff for a cake. I now have a set of scales from the professional cookware shop.

Wow! Loads of advice & ideas. Thanks everyone. I'll have a proper look at the various sites & links over the weekend. Think I'll go for the flat ones with add & weigh - though I love the look of these. Totally wrong for my kitchen, colour-wise & space-wise, but just sooooo nice! (BTW the white version is 1/2 price in argos right now @ about £20)

Hi all,

As I'm trying to cook more and getting into OS, I'm beginning to worry that my £5 scales are not up to the job. They can be a bit 'random'. Is it worth investing in a more expensive pair or will another cheapie set do the trick? Which ones do you all use???

I've got a digital set from Argos which were £20. cat no 840/2040. They work fine. The bowl isn't huge though.
I also have a cheapy set from Argos which were £2.99! 840/0987. They're just as good but are not digital - well, whadya expect for 3 quid!
