I rip a sheet of newspaper in half, fold it in two and wrap it around the bottom of each loo roll and tie with a bit of string. Then they all go in an old washing up bowl - you can get loads more in one of these and it's easy to cart around and water.

Now that is very sensible. Not as much fun, but very sensible:rotfl:

nossy - I give all my filled loo rolls a good soaking to get the compost really moist before getting them out of the containers in which they're stored. When the cardboard and compost is wet it's less inclined to leak out the bottom.

If you're planning to fill loo rolls with compost for growing parsnips, runner & climbing beans, etc. and have a Lakeland Jam Funnel, this is ideal for the purpose. The hole in the funnel is exactly the same diameter as the loo roll hole, so you can fill it neatly without spilling compost all over the surrounding areas.

I make a funnel out of paper, then you can make it as wide as you like. A simple sheet of A4 with one piece of masking tape on it.

You use them in place of pots, the advantages being they are free and you can plant them directly into the soil where they will rot and the roots will "escape" into the surrounding soil without difficulty

I just stand mine up in a seed tray and fill by hand, any excess compost that spills over into the tray is a handy water reservoir and some will root into it, but I find on transplanting the extra roots are not damaged
