The winter has been so miserable and wet, then cold and now wet again I can't wait to get at it (oh err missus) in the garden and start growing again.

    What has everyone started already?

We normally plant in loo roll centres in the house, last year I did them in the greenhouse and lost the lot to mice,so put the seed straight in the ground that was ok untill the wood pidgeons decided to eat them,we finnished up with four plants in the garden.
My OH is on bean duty this year,it will be French climbers, as we had a few in pots last year,we both agree they are a better flavour and crop well.
If you think this has helped make my day and hit the thanks button:beer:

my son threw away my toilet roll inners cos he thought they were rubbish

i have started to collect again but we don't seem to be getting through enough toilet roll :o

i was thinking of trying carrots and some other root veg like parsnips as the tubes seemed to be a good shape for it, i have also made a small collection of Mcd's paper cups with their holders i thought i could cut them down and make a few holes in the bottom then the holders would be like transfer trays? anyone else use anything weird and wonderful at all?

We've been doing this for the past few years and had good results.

To stop ours falling apart we pack 5 or 6 rolls into the tall clear plastic punnets you get nectarines & plums in (saved for re-use each year). - Having first put a double sheet of newspaper in the bottom of the punnet to stop the compost escaping, then fill the rolls and the punnets with compost.

When ready to plant out we make a hole with a bulb planter then drop the loo roll straight in and top up with seived soil. (I wish they would make bulb planters the same size as toilet rolls!)

Only problem we 'think' we've ever had was some ink inside one lot of toilet rolls seemed to stunt the growth one year. But once in the ground they took off as normal.

i've been using toilet tubes for a few years now and never seem to have any problems, and they are great at just falling apart in the ground when the plants have finished growing. Like suzy m i have always wedged mine into plastic containers such as mushroom boxes so they stand upright.

  • hi i heard you could do this a few years ago but have never tried it myself, it encourages striaght growth and also toilet roll with break down once wet, has anyone tried this would love to hear as im thinking of trying it this year.
One day I will live in a cabin in the woods
  • I do this every year. Carrots object to being handled for planting out, so I find this is the easiest method to grow them. Straight growth will depend also on your ground and how stony it is. Thin out as normal when they are established. The cardboard tube rots away during the season and leaves no trace (well mine haven't anyway!)

For more carrot help, check the useful links sticky at the top of the board.
