I have read various threads where people use empty toilet roll tubes for planting seeds in but how do you stop the compost falling out of the bottom of them when you want to re-pot them?

It wont because the roots will help hold it in place, plus with you watering it over weeks it tends to just stick together. I knocked one of my sweet peas over and the muck didnt fall out, so it must work lol

Fill a seed tray with the tubes and fill with compost. Don't move them until the roots have taken over.:D

Also plant the whole thing into the next container - tube and all.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • Yep plant the tube out with it. It will rot down nicely

i tend to use a bit of masking tape across the bottom until the seeds establish then remove the tape before planting out.

Very useful for sweet peas, which have deep roots and really don't like them disturbed when planting out.

Brilliant for carrots and things that don't like being transplanted :)
  • I have used the rolls for the first time this year and they are turning mouldy?

I read somewhere (may have been here, maybe elsewhere, not sure but thanks to whoever it was :T ) that putting a used teabag in the bottom of the tube solves the compost problem, so that's what I've done with mine. They're a perfect fit.

It's normal and harmless. Some of mine are very furry in places.
