Broad beans like this method as well

I've been 'saving' my toilet roll middles for about 6 months now, and got work to save them as well, so I have more than enough for when I start to grow things this year.

  • Don't forget, cut toilet roll tubes in half to multiply your "pots"
Kitchen roll tubes can be cut in 3 of 4 sections too ;)

  • We go for the crowbar method to ensure straight carrots on fairly stony ground. Use a crowbar or stake to create a hole and fill with sand, sow seed direct as this avoids moving plant which carrots don't like. Thin out as normal- we get great prize winning carrots with no forks this way.

We use the toilet rolls for runner beans and sweet peas.
  • could you uses card egg boxes aswell
One day I will live in a cabin in the woods

this will probably be a silly question but how do you get the loo rolls out of the seed tray or wherever and into the ground without all the soil and seedling falling out the bottom? thanks!
  • A quick movement with ones hand underneath usually works fine.:rotfl:

Make the hole in the ground first, then tilt the tube inside the tray. Put your hand under it and into the hole it goes. There will probably be enough root in the tube to hold most of the compost anyway

you make it sound so easy! I can imagine sitting there with empty pots and a huge pile of compost and seedlings all over the floor :o thanks!

I rip a sheet of newspaper in half, fold it in two and wrap it around the bottom of each loo roll and tie with a bit of string. Then they all go in an old washing up bowl - you can get loads more in one of these and it's easy to cart around and water.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try - oh bu99er that just cheat :D
