Ah, thanks. Her erosion isnt dietary though....

Sorry Ellie, was just saying what that particular toothpaste was developed for. If your daughter has developed attrition of her teeth (toothwear due to grinding of teeth) then the best thing would be to have a hard acrylic bite splint made to prevent further wear. Your dentist will be able to advise if this is suitable in your daughters case.
  • Recently I seem to have become strangely alllergic to some brands of toothpaste. A brushing with McCleans or Colgate can have me attempting to remove my lips forward from my gums, giving the impression of a slightly rabid dog.
Even if I rinse, I can still feel it the next morning.

I've found one brand that seems OK - Wilkinson's cheapest one - fortunately. Tesco's is also OK.

But I'd like to know what is in the more expensive brands and why should it have such an effect on me when I've been happily brushing for years. And am I missing out on some magic ingredient, which will probably cause my teeth to fall out, by using such a cheap brand?

Other recommmedations gratefully received on toothpaste, shampoo and mascara, as I seem to be gradually developing allergies to these as well.

PS Meant 'Cheap' instead of 'chep' -in the title but don't know how to change it

I wouldn't worry - there was a guy on the BBC last week saying that you could (in theory) brush your teeth with dust (or a paste made from) and it works just as well as toothpaste...

Apperently it's the slightly abrasive quality of the paste that cleans the teeth more than anything else...

    I wouldnt recommend it though!!

I've never encountered any issues with my toothpaste and I tend to stick with colgate/macleans myself - although some of them are a bit potent first thing!!

  • I was told that its the brush and technique you use thats important not the toothpaste.

The foaming agent in toothpastes, shampoos and soaps is a chemical called sodium laurel sulphate.

There are some nasty stories about this chemical if you google it.

Not fully convinced by them, but it is the thing in soapy products that people tend to be allergic to.

It could be that the brand you've found has less of it in.

may be worth looking at the ingredients to see if there is a common ingredient in the things you react to.

The toothpaste you mention won't harm you. It is, as others have said, the brushing technique and frequency that is more important than the toothpaste.

It would be best if the toothpaste you use has fluoride in it though.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

my dentist tells me that the latest advice is to spit but not rinse last thing at night. Any idea why?

  • I'd have thought it was to not rinse all the paste off and therefore it can stay on your teeth overnight. I couldn't do it though, hate having toothpaste in my mouth

Salivary glands slow down at night, so that anything in the mouth last thing is on the teeth all night.

This is bad if it's a choccy biccy, but good if it's fluoride and the antibacterials in the toothpaste.
