Hi all,

I think everyone now has enough energy-saving lightbulbs to last them for many many years given how cheaply they've been sold, and given away by some organisations like housing associations. That's a shame as I think quite a lot of them could end up in a landfill site spilling its mercury content when they are surplus to requirements and thrown out in the trash, given that they have zero re-sale value these days.
The days of CFLs are numbered as LED lighting is already capable of providing more efficient lighting and is only held back by the cost of the multiple LEDs needed to provide the desired light output for a household light-bulb. Where bulb cost is less important than longevity, LEDs are already seeing common usage such as in car headlights.
Buying a CFL today is like buying a valve in the days when transistor radios were about to take over, as the CFLs will soon seem as out-dated as valves when the smaller and more efficient LED equivalents are available in a year or two. I'm only 39yo but that seems like a good a way as any to describe the current situation. You don't need to stock up on cheap valves for your old radio, because you'll have a transistor radio very soon and it will last forever.0 -

Are you saying i shouldnt have bought 100 e/savers for 1p each at tescos? have i wasted £1?
In a word, "yes" - you have wasted £1, but more importantly you've bought 100 bulbs with toxic mercury in them that is very expensive to dispose of safely. I know someone else would have bought them if you hadn't done so, but buying them even at 1p each promotes their continued production.
The exception to this would be if you live in a mansion or stately home and can replace 100 standard bulbs with your new CFLs, in which case it was a wise purchase and I congratulate you on making the move to much more energy efficient lighting throughout your manor. Those 100 CFL bulbs should allow you to light all the rooms you placed them in for many years to come, even if your servants leave them on 24x7.
I suppose you are intending to give the bulbs to friends and neighbours, but the problem with that is that most people are being innundated with free lightbulbs from energy suppliers, housing associations etc, meaning there are more CFL bulbs around than anyone knows what to do with. Bearing in mind they can be expected to last at least 5 years of use each, and will be obsolete and considered inefficient long before then, even 1p is too much to pay for a bulb you don't need today, when considering the environmental cost.0 -

I also need some LED replacements for my 5ft flourescent tubes.Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j

You obviously live in the dark about how many light fittings exist in normal homes.
I said earlier in this thread, when the Tesco 1p offer was on, I'd bought 80 of them in 9 different formats.
On another thread discussing the same issue someone questioned why you would need more than 6 or 8 ????
Well I live in a normal 3 bed semi and I counted up all my light fittings that now have energy-saving lamps fitted and listed them in response.
How many?
At that time it was FIFTY FOUR !!!
And I'd actually miscounted and missed 4 - In fact it is FIFTY EIGHT.
