Thanks for the list Kaos. There were all sorts of bulbs at Oldbury, West Midlands, marked at full price this afternoon. I was looking for 20w and found ...

    5 051399 53346 20 watt (100w) Tesco energy saving stick

took four, there are about 50 left and they went through at 1p each, enough to replace all my lights when the old ones go. The price tags do not match up with the stock on the shelf above so I had to use your list and they were all showing at full price but scanned at 1p. It does mean if anyone is passing that store and have the list you might fnd others at 1p even though there is not a lot on the shelves.

  • Had a tesco delivery last week. Ordered some 1p bulbs and they sent 4 bulbs priced at 2.99 each! Not even listed as replacements! Glad I scanned the receipt to check-looking for my 4p purchase! Gave them back to the driver and got my refund.

I was told last week that they had sold out of stock of 1p bulbs and wouldn't be getting any more in because as of this month they are no longer allowed to sell them....and thats why they had been 1p. never managed to even clap eyes on the 1p bulbs let alone buy any!

Manufacturers of the compact fluorescent lamps do not warn at all about mercury danger when the lamp is broken:
" http://www.epa.gov/mercury/spills/index.htm#flourescent CFLs contain small amounts of the toxic element mercury. If a bulb is broken, it releases mercury vapor. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has released a document on cleaning up broken CFLs, instructing people to not vacuum, to open windows and leave the room for 15 minutes, clean up the pieces while wearing gloves, use duct tape to pick up small pieces, and double-bag in plastic all broken pieces, in order to avoid mercury poisoning. These precautions are not printed on the packaging of CFLs in the United States. "

Remember that if there will be any visible drops of mercury and they will not be collected, they will be evaporating staying in the gaps in the floor for years (not for 15 min like it is suggested above - 15 min airing of room is sufficient to remove only mercury vapour if there are no drops of spilled mercury, which would release new vapour), poisoning slowly people living in such house, and causing over years a myriad of illnesses (mimicing other common illnesses: http://www.immunesupport.com/library/bulletinarticle.cfm?ID=3318&EM=020602&PROD%20=PH155 ), which nobody will be able to track back to a mercury drop evaporating over the years.

Wish I hadn't read this. I was screwing one of these bulbs in the other day and it literally shattered in my hand. Does that mean I'm a gonner?

I purchased a 5 more value ones at my local Tesco. They had tons. None of the other varieties left, though.

Why are people buying so many of these cheap low-energy lightbulbs? 1p or not, these are bulbs designed to last six years in any normal use, and will probably last quite a bit longer in most places. It sounds like some people have enough of them to last for twenty years or more.

LED technology is continuing to improve quite rapidly, and it is possible that it or something else could become much more efficient than CFL lights within a decade, leaving those 1p CFL lights as energy-wasting mercury-polluting left-overs.

The 5 for 40p offer at Tesco is specifically for Energy Saving Sticks. Most other energy saving bulbs are on a BOGOF offer.

I got 5 11W Tesco Energy Saving Sticks today and they are supposed to be £2.19 each, so I got a £10.55 saving on my receipt.
