We just moved into our first home yesterday :D I have a million and one things to do, but my number one priority for tonight is to clean the bath. It's got some really nasty brown/yellowy stains where it looks like the tap has dripped. I assume it's dirty limescale?

A quick search reveals vinegar. I find it hard to believe that will work on such a tough stain though.

    My mum has suggested Viakal.

Anyone else have any input? I have white vinegar (somewhere in a box). So I'm willing to give that a go.

i have used vinegar many times to remove limescale from taps or shower heads. It's very effective. I had previously used viakal but don't find i need it any more. I suspect u might also need to mix some bleach and bicarb of sofa, make up a poltice and spread it over the stain and leave for an hour at least. I suspect it might require a couple of attempts.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Thanks. I will try the vinegar and let you know how it comes out. I'll get some bicarb too.

Lidl do their own brand descaler for 99p for a big (500ml?) bottle and it's fantastic for things like this, much cheaper than other own brands and really effective. I use it for all my kitchen and bathroon cleaning now.

The other thing I have used on our bath, we had strange yellow/brown spots appear all over the base of or plastic/fibreglass type bath/ I found a pot of oven cleaner , looks like the gumption I remember as a kid, grey gritty stuff to rub in with a damp cloth. It took loads of elbow grease but it was the only thing which worked and I tried loads of stuff with no effect . I'm pretty sure I found this stuff in Tesco's and it's lasted for ages. I never did use it on the oven...it says it has all sorts of uses for enamel type stuff etc.

If none of the above solutions work, you could try Limelight which comes in a green plastic bottle. We live in a high water limescale area and find it works pretty well and removing the worst stains.

I tried white vingar last night. Let it soak for hours. Scrubbed. Nothing came off :(

I am planning to install a new bathroom, but it's becoming lower and lower priority as we find other things need doing. I'd really like to make this bath a bit more nicer to have a bath in.

I will try neat bleach tonight. See if I can't fade the brown colouring.
  • I scrubbed the bath out yesterday, however about halfway down it all becomes dusty, slightly gritty feeling. It looks nice and white so apart from the texture it looks ok. Does anyone know what it could be.

We haven't lived here long, so i have no idea what it is!

I don't think the modern liquid cleaners work too well and its probably just soap scum. Try filling th bath up with hot water and biological soap powder and letting it soak for a couple of hours before rinsing. If this doesn't work try Jif (or supermakets own) cream that usually gets it off.
