Hi all, I've just joined this thread as I'm currently trying to save for a deposit. I'm 27, single, and currently have £12500 in my ISA. Hoping to knuckle down now and save as much as possible so I can hopefully buy next year. Happy saving

  • Hi all! My first post on MSE...

I'm 27 and saving a deposit for my first house. I have built up a good amount of savings (about £33,000) but my partner has almost nothing so hopefully we will buy together but with unequal shares.

My target is £40,000 as I'd really like us to get a 20% deposit in order to secure a better deal on the mortgage, so I don't think it will take us too much longer.

Does anyone have an opinion on how "help to buy" ISAs are likely to affect the first time buyer market in the next 6-9 months? If every first time buyer has one, will the cost of property not just be pushed up?

    Thanks in advance for advice!

    September update from me:

I saved £1,007 in September, which brings my 2015 (so far) total to £7,503 and my overall total to £92,342.

The house I liked wasn't as nice as I first thought, so I'm back to saving!

Well, it's taken me 4 years to save £26k, and that's because I'm fortunate enough to live with a parent "rent" free (I do pay a share of house hold bills).

I made initial enquires into a property today... the agent wasted no time in inviting me to consult with their in house broker to "validate" my position. I was like "no thanks" :p

    Hi selement
You'll get there - like J i m I'm also at home with the parents and in my 30s. It's not an easy situation but it's cheaper to rent here than elsewhere so I'm able to keep control of what I'm putting away monthly. I hate the wait, but keep thinking of the end outcome!! :money: best of luck with your savings X

  • Hi, I'd like to join the club please.

Currently saving £1k every month. I have saved up £3k so far, I should have £6k by Dec 31. I don't count current salary into savings. I've registered on electoral roll last month and now I'm getting a mobile contract and a credit card (which I'll pay in full by DD at the end of the month) to build credit. So thanks MSE for all the great tips!

I'm hoping to buy a flat early 2017. I plan to save £20k by Jan 2017 which I'll use as a deposit for £120k (max) flat. By that time I'll be on £32k salary and will have a full year worth of credit history, so I'm hoping to get £100k mortgage.

OK so I've planned everything, now I only need to be patient and wait.

£12750 in the deposit pot, I also live at home but I work away during the week (250 miles away). I don't pay rent but my fuel bill is close to £300 per month. I've just started to 'round down' my bank account daily so once I have £1000 emergency fund I will transfer this to my deposit pot X

Probably my last update on this thread now and I've also finally surpassed the 100k mark!
It's taken many years of 'work hard - save hard', but I will be picking up the keys to my very own home in the next few weeks!!
Best of luck to everyone with saving their deposits, keep up all the good work! :D
