Hi everyone! Our DD was born yesterday afternoon
Congratulations! What is her name?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Congrats Bone Idle
Oh, and rach1982, Ivana's right0 -
Hi everyone! Our DD was born yesterday afternoon so our deposit saving quest has temporarily slipped out of my mind
But it gives me a sense of focus, and wanting to edge ever nearer that ultimate total so that we can settle down properly as a family in our own home!
Oh HUGE congratualtions! How wonderful!   :beer:0 -
OK, I just got the phone call from the garage and the car cost a (just) four figure sum to repair. I'm absolutely gutted. I tried to sell it about three years ago to no luck, spent a fortune on a roofrack and boxy thing to move abroad with and have spent increasing amounts early keeping what was my great little car on the road. I guess havig spent all this money it will go for another year, but I suppose I have to try and work out if its worth trying to keep after that. Its got tatty now and is not really worth anything I suppose. I can't stand the idea of trying to find a suitable replacment. I HATE cars
I wish I didn't need one so much.:(

Cars have been the problem with my savings as well. Had to spend aound £500 on my fiesta for new brakes & tyres & a sump, then had to insure it...tax is this month but I am likely to now be spending a few thousand buying my mates car even though my one would probably go happily for another few years without problem. New car is just a bit too good an opportunity to pass up however but it does mean I will now have to tax 2 cars, insure two cars & try & flog my old car all the while without my savings from icesave
Stupid cars...stupid iceland.0 -
Yes, we insured just recently too. That was huge...DH has only been driving a few years and I had a run in with a number 14 bus a few years ago (bus won, sadly, ambulance I was trying to pull over for, and my no claims bonus - lost) and although I have really done very well with using the car less, there are times its anavoidable. For example, tomorrow, going to an afternoon and day function. In the train means three changes and leaving at dawn, in the car we can leave just before lunch, and it will be cheaper, but it IS a hundred odd miles, and then the thing finishes late at night, no chance of getting home by train (could die laughing at the thought of trying) so driving back is only option. (sadly, great wine likely to be served.)0

LIR - £1000+ on repairs?
I'm definitely a bangernomics kind of guy - buy cheap, if repairs cost too much just scrap the car and buy a replacement. This way of doing things doesn't suit everyone; maybe you need a particular kind of car for work, or for the kids or whatever, but as far as I'm concerned I buy below £1k (or close to) with at least 10 months test left to run, and treat it as a 'disposable' car
Cemetery, if you're taking the old car off the road you can get a refund for insurance left to run (minus an admin fee usually), and if you SORN and have over a month left on the tax you'll get a refund there too. Bear in mind that it's often easier to sell a second hand car if it has tax on though, might be worth losing £50 or whatever to get a quick sale. Also has implications with regards to no 'test drives' etc.0 -

Mr DT, I know. This was my first 'new'car (actually it was second hand on makers warranty, six months after first purchaser). I was at the time, still quite young, just made first bit of decent money and been through several bangers. Being stranded alone, female in a car, helpless was a feature of much of my earlier driving. I also did a lot of miles at the time for work, and usually to tight schedules. I think I'd be happier in a banger other than the one I've reated if I were more mecanically minded. Buying a banger is a scary business when you know how many weels a car should have but thats about it. Living remotely, with animals to feed and being on the road at strange times means reliabilty has an element of importance. I do need somethings in a car (my car is really too small now, but we cope). I know its quirks and its failings well enough to predict a lot of them. when DH's salary goes up in just over a year we might consider a nother nearly new car to run into the groundIs therestill such a thing as car leasing? I guess it doesn't work for animal household if there is.

I have gone opposite way, I have bought my Honda Civic, cost me £5,300. I have had it over two years now and it only needed new brake pads (£40) and a new tire (£45) and that is it. If you ignore the £2,500 worth of damage I did to it when I crashed it. But anyways, trouble free motoring circa 35,000 miles in 2 years."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -
Cars being a big outlay I guess when you are saving, mine cost me NZ$2000 almost three years ago, and it is fine, only needed waterpump at some stage and then tires because I do a LOT of driving around.
Got it through private sale, from a guy who was leaving the country in a week and needed to sell. So it was less than half what he was asking :j by the time my ex step father in law (haha) bargined him down.
House savings doing well still. Am thinking since I now know I am going to meet my yearly goals I am not sure now whether to spend the excess money on my holiday in January (ie, stock up on petrol vouchers and stuff now - we'll be driving) or keep saving?
What would everyone else do?"Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!!"Nov NSD: ?/30 Nov Make 10 Day ?/300Get Rid Of Debt: ?/2000 !! :mad:0
