I plan on saving a minimum of £400 a month starting with pay day next Friday. This should go up to at least £500 per month from April and maybe £600 per month soon after that.

Ooh Starbrite, what car do you have? I would never sell mine, it's my main hobby, but I have learnt to drive the best way for fuel economy (notwithstanding the odd spirited drive of course) :D

I am not doing all that well due to petrol costs actually (haha!), just had a bad month with visiting friends and family (well it was great apart from the cc bill afterwards!) but hoping for a payrise at work (2 years overdue...long story!) so hopefully I can upgrade my monthly savings amount soon!

    hi everyone,

just dropping in with a wee update... made £100 on ebay sales this month. well chuffed! have an extra £280 to go into joint account savings once my new isa is opened and have £170 left in account for food, hope to only spend another £40 of that tho

on a downside, OH overtime has been stopped for an unkown number of months. this is a real blow as he was doing 12-15hrs extra each week, all proceeds of which were going to clearing his overdraft and then onto starting his own savings account. pretty gutted, but i suppose it was bound to happen in the current climate. :(
    Moved into dream house - 17/08/12 :D
    Savings - £600
    Xmas 2013 - £43
    Credit card - £2741

I have an Audi TT Roadster :D Love it best car I've ever had it's only the baby one, 1.8 180BHP but it does drink more than my friends Ford KA. It's not that bad, Just cost's £80 to fill up so spend about £150 - £200 a mth on go go juice....... Don't know real figure I refuse to work it out...

Also way I see it when I grow up and find the right idiot to have kids with I won't be able to own such a car, so I may as well have some fun while I'm single, Unless I make him drive around in a family car hmmmm

    What car do you have?

I think have whatever car you want, but likewise with any purchases, be aware of what it's costing you. If you're too scared to know, maybe it's not the right car for you. If you can see the figures and accept them then you can start to budget around it and make other sacrifices. Otherwise you'll be saving forever!
I certainly intend to have a nice car when I'm married with kids, just another reason to work hard now.

i've got a fiesta zetec s (bought it from new nearly 4 years ago) and have been saving for the last 2 and a half years (see sig below) i have managed to do both. I wanted to buy a new car because i know that i wouldn't be able to afford 1 straight after i buy a place of my own and the car i had before was so unreliable. I have made some sacrifies because of the car but i wouldn't change it for anything, if anything it has made me appreciate money even more.

I have a 1.7 Puma, great mix of sportiness yet cheap to run! Have a long list of dream cars though, work in progress :D

Sorry for going off topic there but my mortgage fund may yet become a car fund instead (potential for family member to invest in my future house allowing me to spend the deposit elsewhere!) :T

Vl- couldn't you get a cheaper car and thank your family member by using their contribution as just that rather than a replacement to your own money? 8k is an awful lot to blow in one go, especially as you know all too well how hard it is putting it together!

I take it you do a lot of driving then.

I budget car fuel at about £15 a week, or roughly £60 a month, a full tank costs about £77-80 at current prices.

Like others, I try to drive with fuel economy in mind, and also walk to many places. Indeed, I only really use the car for commuting to and from work, or if I'm going somewhere beyond reasonable walking distance. I actually walk into town to do my shopping, as it both saves on fuel and helps to keep me fit.

Saving is all about making sacrifices and cutting back on the things that you don't strictly need, that shouldn't mean cutting things out completely, but you'd be surprised what a difference you can make if you look for cheaper ways of doing thing things you have to do.
