Some huge totals there. How long have you been saving tara747 and Jackies?
This is my first post in this thread. I was looking to get to 10k by the end of the year but have hit it this month so I'm chuffed! Love seeing my total grow.

I've been saving for about 7 years, but only got serious about it when I joined MSE i.e. about 4 years ago!

    Hi

Im from Northern Ireland. My wife and I are currently saving a house deposit and have £28,500 so far.

Seems a tiny amount compared with some of the crazy amounts on this thread!

thats double what we're even planning to save, i'm also from N.I house prices are fab here at the mo if your a buyer £30k will get you a nice share in quite a few diferent houses in diferent locations :)

Where are you both planning to buy/build? I live in South Belfast and would probably want to buy there too, wouldn't feel safe in other areas of the city (and the news lately has only served to underline this!!!). Unfortunately it's the dearest area but there you go.

Jackies - what are the 'sealed pot challenge' and 'virtual sealed pot challenge' as referenced in your sig?
On MSE there is a sealed pot challenge (where you put all your loose change into a pot over a year and then you add it up at the end) and the virtual pot is simialr but related to online back accoutns (every friday you round down the money in you bank accounts to the nearest £10 and save the difference over a year)
    Sealed Pot Challenge (1031) 2012 = 148.17
    Virtual Sealed Pot Challenge -
    2012 191.39

    2013 Goal: Overpay mortgage:

Definitely.I would rather live in a smaller house than in an area where I didn't feel safe or that was full of spides. Went to see a friend who's moved to a dodgy part of the city last week, couldn't wait to get away!!! It freaked me out a bit.

We are looking in North Down and East Belfast area. The nice areas will always have a premium but will be worth it.

    Hi Team,

An update from me. I've just been going through my finances and it would appear that my interest free period on one of my credit cards is going to come to an end in about 4 months.

So, my deposit saving will be reduced over the next few months while I pay the balance of that credit card (about £2000) down before the interest kicks in.

Should mean that I'll put around £500 into the credit card and £500 into the deposit fund for the next 3 months.

    We'll see how it goes

I'm planning on South Down - recently moved out of belfast back to the parents!
But i'm loving it - and have no desire to ge back to Belfast

I was looking in Belfast for a while before I changed jibs and moved hime, and it was originally only South Belfast that appealed to me too, I did look at certain areas in the west as well, and well some of them were actually nice and maybe if circumstances were different I would have picked the west!
South Belfast is expensive, and some of the houses you could get in the west in comparison to south really tempted me, and I don't think the areas were actually dodgy - nice quiet estates and such!

However - nothing beats south Down!

Hi, is everyone on here a house buyer or anyone a flat buyer? just curious as had always wanted to get my own house with a garden and now been thinking maybe a flat would be better (price wise anyway) :)

Yes, South Down is lovely. Do you commute?

I wouldn't live in West Belfast if you paid me a million quid. I have a few friends who bought there in desperation during the boom as they couldn't afford anywhere nicer, and they all hate it. They're in Ladybrook, Lagmore and the Blacks Road btw.

South all the way for me, definitely.

I wouldn't even rent a flat, let alone buy one. I hate the very idea of it. But each to their own! :)
