Surely 15 pounds is a small price to pay for such a classy cosmopolitan atmosphere.
  • Am going to Spain on Monday and am trying to decide whether to buy Euros before I go (currently 1.22 to the pound from Travelex on line) or whether to use my Nationwide flex account card and withdraw money from ATMs. I know I won't be charged interest or admin fees with this card but does anyone know how much I would get to the pound if I used the ATMs?

    Helps greatly appreciatedangel-smiley-002.gif

Usually I buy my Euros at our local Post Office counter but this week I bought some in the ICE Bureau De Change at St Pancras railway station in London. What a rip-off! Their exchange rate was only 1.1373 to the pound, PLUS a Service Charge of £3, PLUS a Counter Charge of £2.68 for paying with my debit card (which was not mentioned at the time)! This meant that I was effectively charged around £15 more than I would have paid for 200 Euros at the Post Office.

You can get much better rates than the Post Office. The PO was good a few years ago but not any longer!

It depends on the rate on the day, but generally it is greater than the rates that you see in exchange windows. So if you see 1.22 Euros to the pound then you would be likely to get about 1.26 (very roughly) as it is closer to the trading rate.

    Currently 1.00 GBP = 1.26 EUR

If not a credit card, how about a Nationwide Debit card - full details in the Spending Overseas article :)
