I know this site is about moneysaving, and gawd bless it for all the money its saved me in the past few months/years, but i think people worrying about the odd euro here and there when they are going on holiday is pushing the boundaries of moneysaving, sure if you are changing thousands/ten of thousands of pounds i can understand it but for instance if you purchased your euros today from travelex you would get 1.23 to the £ however pitsea tescos post office is doing them at 1.25, so even if you changed £1000 you would end up with 20 extra euros which are only worth £16.

Im not having a pop at anyone on here I just think people need to factor in the time spent looking for the money, travel to get it and parking etc just to save a few quid.

Just my two penne'th, 2.5cents, worth

    all the best

£16? That is enough for 4 or 5 beers, depending on where you drink! Or a round of ice creams for the family. Or a holiday present for you phatbear! But i changed my money at Travelex so I don't have enough money to get your fudge/ sticks of rock / cuddly toy.

I always shop around for holiday money, it doesn't take long a quick up and down the high street - PO, and a couple of travel agents, check the bank, done in less time than it takes the missus to try on 7 new outfits (none of which she will end up buying) in New Look.

Sorry but we were getting a 20% better rate last year - that's not a couple of quid ... on a typical 2 week holiday - this year you'll be spending £200 more than last year ! let's expand it a little - how much has your petrol spend gone up ? - your shopping ? bloody Brown !

Course its about saving a few quid and we don't all have time to walk around the shops and surfing the internet all day for the best rate... hence a forum to ask questions. When going for what one wants to be a cheap break and taking food/accommodation/petrol in to account it all adds up.
I havent had a break in europe in years and quite simply wanted to know where I would get the best rate home or away....
  • Can anyone give me some advice as to the most cost-effective way to change a fairly large amount of euros into pounds? I am working in Spain until the end of June and will have about 3000 euros to change. I have a Spanish bank account, but will be closing this then, and also I believe they charge a lot to transfer money to UK bank accounts. They don't speak English either, so it is difficult to get a clear answer.

Re euro exchanges, I always look at this site before buying euros and then take a print out to my local thomas cook to see if they can match the best rate:

    http://www.comparetravelmoney.co.uk/

well worth a try as like others have said it can mean an extra round of ice creams of a glass of cold wine ;)

Also if you book online at thomas cook and collect in store you usually find you get a better rate than just buying in the store - not sure why.

The Post Office advertise a competitive exchange rate on their website, however if you arrange by phone to pick up your Euros from your local PO, or just drop in (as I did) then you don't get the same exchange rate.
The advertised exchange rate is only where you submit the order online - though nowhere does it actually say this.

Currently they're showing a Euro/£ rate of 1.2251 on the website - but what I actually got was 1.1825 - quite a difference.

I'm now 20 Euros down on what I expected to get, & feel totally ripped-off.

I would have gone to M&S - they are around 1.22 with no need to prebook, although I have seen EUR 1.25 at a bureau near London Bridge with no commission :)

Last few years managed to get a high street TA to match travelex but it has got harder.

With euros I find first thing is the best time to ring round as many run out in the afternoon.

Today I got Thomsons to match travelex rate 1.2451 after them giving me the 0% same rate as high street speil.

Had to today because travelex dont have a shop anymore at manchester airport and ICE that do dont allow airport pickups.

For the EXTRA money I made though the lass behind took todays thomson rate for 2k in dollars today for A HOLIDAY NEXT YEAR
I have links to financial and bankruptcy advisors
